Default LG OLED - POOR off-air resolution

I loved my 6 year old LG 60 inch Plasma. We mainly watch off-air TV channels and the 1080i on the old plasma are very crisp. But as soon as I setup my new LG 65 inch OLED65B8STB I was disappointed with the HD channels resolution. It's as though the IF (intermediate frequency) circuitry is way off tune, that is if there is one in these modern digital TV's (I'm an old school TV technician/serviceman). Everything else about the TV is great, eg, the 4K test video on Youtube is brilliant. As a test: When I watch TV channels through my Panasonic set top box there is a noticeable improvement in resolution which brings it very close to the crispness of the old Plasma.

Do you think this could be a fault that can be fixed or poor circuitry design?
    Cheers, Tony

FTA quality is appalling at best. Watching it on a UHD OLED TV simply magnifies the problem.
Did you not ask to see some FTA content prior to your purchase?
Broadcast TV is moribund and will continue to go through it's death rattles by shoving more and more mindless pap through the 23 MHz bandwidth allocated to them.
Your old plasma TV took the rough edges of an already bad signal. A bit like Vaseline on the lens to cover up the wrinkles of the ageing starlet.

yes, watching iptv from the uk or usa is a real eye opener.

their sd is 720p and hd 1080p, i even have some 4k sports and adult channels.....

I can't reccommend 4k porn, too much detail. some things are probably best left to the imagination.....

the difference between our sd fta and something like heartbeat filmed in hd on a hd channel like win hd is remarkable.

    using a new 65" lg oled -

the c8 uses a new processor and is a big improvement on the cheaper b8 series and pretty much the same quality picture as the 7.5k 'wallpaper' model......

Yep, our SD on FTA is shocking in a world of high resolution.

But back to the OP, he is saying the picture is noticeably better with a STB attached instead of using the tuner. Surprisingly, I cant find any reviews for this TV.

Ironically, I have a LG 60 inch Plasma the same as Tony's old TV. I haven't upgraded it, as I am more than happy with the picture.

Almost all STBs can produce a noticeably better upscaled picture than any TV. Panasonic do this extremely well.
The trade off with TVs today is that even the most expensive model is a cost down exercise. LG and their retail partners are in the business of shifting boxes.
Speaking with factory engineers has opened my eyes to the world of micro-cents. Even the GUI was being pared back to save code and bytes. All the horsepower in the device is dedicated to driving the panel, not scaling crap content.
Naturally, in store, the best source material will be used for demonstration. Back in the day, I had a run-in with a HN salesman who refused to show FTA content on the latest 84" UHD TV. Claimed it would cost him sales.
Having been to the national playout centre of the nine network, and seen the quality of incoming content; what gets fed to the public is a disgrace. Then again, you get what you pay for.
