Holy smoke, this would be horrific!
And what a lucky escape from death or serious injury.
Bring on the lawyers!
Sign is only 12 months old!
If u want to go on an expedition get a Land Rover, if u want to come home from an expedition get a Landcruiser!
Look Here -> |
Farrrrrrkkkkkkkk!!!
Looks like the the supports had sheared off just below where they were bolted.
Bad welds?
I've lost count how many times I've driven under that particular sign in the past 12 months.
Mate, how many feet per second was she travelling and how many more would it have taken for that sheer guillotine edge impact to be across her windscreen!
Lets not think if it were a road bike.
Like a limb from a tree, man its bigger once its hits the ground
Sign was very high and large, i wonder if it was just fatigue under multiple wind loads, would be a lot of flex cycles.

From the looks of it, the weld looks as though it has let go. However, how they can determine what is going to let go without substantial time and effort spent in checking every sign after every storm. Yes, it shouldn't have happened, and everyone was bloody lucky that only one car was written off and only one person was injured. The fact that it is a relatively new sign, the company responsible for it's manufacture and supply must be held to account. If it were an older one, then every sign of similar age and older would need to be checked for similar fatigue.
I'm out of my mind, but feel free to leave a message...
If the woman's car was there a split second sooner... the outcome would likely have been fatal.
Must have also been relatively quiet on the road at the time as well.... otherwise there could have been a multi-car pile-up.
imagine the shock she would have experienced , not even see the sign coming down as it was above her. lucky she wasnt killed
I reckon she would struggle to remember most of that.
My guess is weld fatigue from high winds.
I reckon it would change the colour of my undies ????
if i was her id never buy a lotto ticket again because
she has used up any and all luck she may have had.
going 2k faster or sign coming down 2 seconds latter much different outcome
bloody scary shit.
The height of that sign with no additional support from above is ridiculous.
Don't have to be an engineer to see that, just a bit of common sense, that seems to be lacking in our over regulated world.
Wonder how many more of those guillotines they have got waiting for us on our highways to hell.

What a load of BS, the only way they could be sure is to x-ray EVERY weldMajor Road Projects Authority delivery director Graeme Chambers earlier told Melbourne radio station 3AW he believed there to be no further risk to drivers.
"Equipment was used to test surrounding areas ... and the experts say there are no concerns that it will happen again," he said.
"We don't know at this moment why this occurred, but we take this very seriously," Mr Chambers said.

Even made news in USA.
The sign is around 4m x 5m with a lot of heavy steel.
Imagine the wind loading on it..... totally relying just on those two welds.
Amazingly, the female driver escaped with minor injuries.
From some close-up images, the weld appears to have failed with fatigue.
You can even see a rust stain running down the steel beam, so it's been failing for a while and eventually let go.

That rusted crack looks to me that the beam failed not the actual weld.
A street sign that is 4m high on top of a cross beam, a hideous design flaw.

Statistically, if you wait long enough, everything will happen!
They have already removed other signs
If u want to go on an expedition get a Land Rover, if u want to come home from an expedition get a Landcruiser!
Don't shoot the welder, that is metal fatigue due to not enough bracing and/or not enough weld point. If installed to an Engineer's specification I certainly hope his insurance is paid up
There is a fine line between "Hobby" and "Madness"
There has been so many road crews out after midnight now, closing sections of hwys and roads
Must have prompted some panic and due diligence
If u want to go on an expedition get a Land Rover, if u want to come home from an expedition get a Landcruiser!

Has there been any updates on this as to whom they are blaming?
