Default An old proverb given a new twist

The and the both report the following:

A South Australian supermarket appears to have done the unthinkable — banning free handouts of the iconic smiley fritz to children because it is a "slipping hazard".

When will they finally ban bananas?

This is the first time I have become aware of such handouts in Australia. Obviously some Germans were behind this, but not thinking straight.

It was totally unthinkable to go past a supermarket deli or butcher in Germany and not receive a free 30cm long Bockwurst or a huge chunk of Fleischwurst for the kids.
In the 30 odd years I lived there I have never heard of anybody complaining or slipping on greasy animal products.
I also never saw any of this on the floor, so maybe the parents were a bit more aware of their children and made sure that any unwanted matter was disposed of carefully.

When I arrived here with two kids and they asked: "Where is my free Wurst?" when we went shopping, I had to say: "This is the Land of the Nothing Free ".

    Now I understand why.

I always got a free slice of fritz as a kid. Tanunda Foodland is unlikely to see any of my business as a result of this. I do go to Tanunda on occasion, but I don't generally shop there, so they are unlikely to go broke because I boycott them.

I patronise my local (municipal) library on a regular basis, and, being the well-brought-up person my parents trained me to be, always wiped my shoes on the mat provided in the inner entrance doorway.

To my dismay, several years ago, I found the mat missing from its usual (sunk into the floor) location.

When I asked what had happened to it, a librarian informed me that it had been removed in order to prevent anyone tripping over it.

I replied, that if I tripped over it, I would consider it to be my own fault for not watching where I was walking.

And that, without the mat, is not a trip hazard?
