    Default Connectivity issue

    Hi All,

Lately when I jump on my PC, I am finding that I get the windows message that my connection to the internet is not working and it gives me the option to repair. Sometimes when I click on this window the problem is fixed( by renewing my IP address), but most of the time I need to restart and then it works fine. I am using an optus supplied cable modem and all lights are active.

Is this a windows issue or a modem issue or something else, your thoughts are appreciated.

    Thank you

try setting up a static ip on the machine and see if it does the same.

just look at the connection then jot down the details then enter the exact same as a static setup

I'm plugged straight into the modem, but I change occasionally to setup the wireless.

Are you plugged straight into a modem or are you using a wireless router then into the modem ???

    Hi B4L

    Check previous post.

Is there a plus to using a static as opposed to automatic setup ??

Static works straight away, Auto means the computer has to search for the IP and then assign it and sometimes it can take a bit of time for them to sync together.

What exactly is your setup ,brand of modem, and brand of router and how are they connected???

Okay most of the time its (Optus supplied) Motorola SB5100 Surfboard Cable modem straight to PC via usb cable.

To go wireless I remove usb cable from Modem and install ethernet cable to WRT54GL Linksys Broadband router.

The issue isn't with wireless, I suspect something is going astray with the modem, but can't be sure

All the jobs where a surfboard modem has been involved, it has always ended up being the modem

Yes I wouldn't be surprised, so I'll see if it plays up again and then go to plan B. I still have a spare surfboard in storage, but to change it over means contacting optus and having a tech attend, since they changed their procedures.

    Thanks B4L

get rid of the usb cable for a start and use the ethernet cable from pc to the modem.
Or run the ethernet cable from the modem to the linksys and linksys to your pc via ethernet.

because ethernet is stable and more reliable.
Use your linksys as a hub, then you can leave it plugged in.

I'm no pro at this stuff, but the usb cable has been okay for the last 3 years. In anycase, I will change it because either way is okay.

    Cheers

ethernet will use less resources. Let us know how it goes.
Have pulled lots of usb plugs in favor of ethernet and fixed things straight away.
As best4less says, supplied modems are shit.
May also be your isp dropping out.

I had the same problem with my laptop, sometimes when I restart my windows it gives me a yellow mark on the wireless connection icon in my tray, and I have to repair, then it renews my ip and it runs normal, to tell you the truth I tried everything I could think of but no go, but I figured out that it's a windows problem not hardware, because the problem got fixed after I formated my laptop, and now it hasn't happened since. so I believe it's a problem with the intel wireless builtin program.

If you set up a static IP on everything you shouldn't have that problem ever.

    Latest update:

I have installed static IP while still using USB cable and my speed is 12Mbps.

I then used the same IP and connected my ethernet cable (I disconnected the usb cable) and then I couldn't connect to my outlook or the net, however the windows icon said I was connected and at a speed of 100Mbps?

    What am I doing wrong???

nothing. this is normal. It is reporting the connection between your pc and router or modem.

Okay Rob, so why can't I get outlook or the net ?

Plus is it okay to use the same static and DNS server settings for both connections?

myf360f1 What I would do is connect the modem to the router via the internet port on the back of the linksys and then hook the main computer and and your router together with a network cable
and then set up the router to do all the work in keeping your internet alive and then setup the static IP on your router and your main computer.

You cant use a static IP if you are going straight to a surfboard as far as I know
