Default Wanted info on DYI Wind turbine

Has anyone built a wind turbine out of a permanent magnet motor and if you have how did you sort out a brake

Made a 7 phase axial and one from a re wired F&P smart drive motor.

Didn't have much use for a brake but they were going to be controlled by an Arduino which drove a relay to either a dummy load or a dead short of the winding's. Water or space heaters can be good loads if you have the use.

If you are doing it for fun/learning/ experiment, fair enough. If you are doing it for serious power generation, unless you live in a place where the wind is strong and seemingly non stop, I'd say there is far better bang for the back in used solar panels. It takes a LOT of wind and a big turbine to make the sort of power you can with panels.

Before you go too far into it, if you are looking at it for serious generation, make sure you do your homework to see the sort of KWH you could expect in your area with the machine you are going to use.

Many think they have ideal location for wind power generation, but surprising how few locations are suitable for *good* wind generation. We had a test rig and would erect at locations we thought would be absotuely ideal for wind power generation, and they would turn out to be a failure. The other issue they may be good sites for a couple of months, but a dud for the rest of the yhear. So many vagaries affect wind generation even at good wind power generation sites. Lots of money, time and equipment is used for many years prior to erecting the large wind turbines.
There is on the BOM website some information on wind by region, look for the 'Wind Rose' information.
With the price of solar panels today, you would want to have an *excellent* wind generation location and site to make it worthwhile.

That's the general consensus I have also seen in discussion on this topic on the internet and in other forums in general. Not worth it.

By all means if someone had a real interest and wanted a small project to learn something, go for it. If you plan on powering your house, not a hope in hell is it remotely feasible or worth it financially.

Check out The Post Apocalyptic Inventor on YouTube. He did a few videos on DIY wind turbines.

    Here's one of them:
