sounds weird to me , that has never happened when i go to repco
or any where else for that matter. On occasion i have needed the VIN to make
sure i get the right part because both our cars fall on a change over yr
and a mixed bag build.
On sunday went to my local repco store, hadn't been for years. anyway purchased a coil pack and a set of plugs for my sons VE.
later that day my son was heading home when he was pulled over, and my son asked why did you pull me over?
cop replied no problem, i noticed you purchased a coil pack and plugs from repco. my son said WTF.......
if this is the trend that cops monitor what you purchase, i say goodbye to repco.
big brother is watching closely

I see most parts places have Rego lookup now
Nothing new
My local Toyota dealer has done Rego look up for years
He can also source stock levels from Autobarn, SCA and Repco from the same screen

If u want to go on an expedition get a Land Rover, if u want to come home from an expedition get a Landcruiser!
must be similar to what i have when needed the vin to know exactly what build
month etc i have , they do the same at the wreckers.
wifes car is a 2007 accent but there are 2 variants
jan- sep oct-dec so need to know which for simple things like door
handle - drive belt water pump etc as i have found to be the case.
Cops need no 'grounds' to stop anybody.
A cop has the right to stop you and just ask for your licence.
When they enter the vehicle details a plethora of information comes back at them and when they saw the recent vehicle related purchase they probably just wanted to make a conversation... or just wanted to let you know that they know everything about you, so you better behave
Yes Big Brother is everywhere but maybe for the police it is for the better.

I see no reason for there to be any data base on what parts have been purchased for a vehicle.
When the cops want to know info like this you can be assured it's not because they have your best interests at heart no matter how they may spin doctor it.

err... I thought this would be obvious but I see how you got confused... allow me to restate:
In that case "She's unregistered, mate" will be the standard reply if I ever get asked by Repco or any other parts monkey!

Or was sitting outside and watched the fella walk out the store
The Rego Parts Look Up is nothing new, and it helps with discrepancies between very similar variants of the same model and incorrect parts being sold.
I'm am sick to my back teeth with useless Repco staff that have no F-ing idea when it comes to parts... Generally it is the younger staff members, or the female ones sadly.
Even my own vehicle has specific parts for the "Month" build for that year.
As mentioned previous, what ever system the motor industry now use, it must a be a central reporting type system, as i've had my Toyota Spare Parts guy, at the Toyota Spare Parts desk tell me how much stock, Burson's, Autobarn, Repco and Supercheap have had when looking for a timing belt kit 18 months ago, yes, these were non genuine parts and he had a stock list in front of him for the town i was in.
And instead of him going through all the Model Numbers and Variants and Types in a drill down menu, he just asked for my rego.. Boom, Done.
How ever, it is a long bow to draw thinking the Police has access to this...
BTW, you DON'T have to give them the Rego, it is clearly optional.... That is your choice.

The fact that there's a highway to hell and a stairway to heaven says a lot about the anticipated traffic flow.
I use the VIN and the Rego look up service all the time, its supplied to me by Repco and other suppliers.
The point of the Rego search is to get the VIN, the VIN helps to identify the model.
Sometimes i simply use the VIC Roads website to do this, punch in the rego, it gives you the VIN.
Now back to using Repcos or other suppliers Rego and VIN searches....
It loads up every available part to suit the vehicle, that is from light globes to starter motors.
You then select the part you need and it gives you availability and the price.
Now using it the way i do, i need to place it on order online, then either get it delivered or pick it up, there is no other connection back to police.
If in store, even less, its not even put into the system, they see its there, they pick it, print a invoice for you to pay and it automatically pulls one off from stock levels in the system.
The police have absolutely no access to the data......
I can tell you 100% that police are looking for all sorts of stuff, especially when walking upto a car at night, they look through the rear window to see how many heads on board, to see if those heads are reaching for things, hiding things. They stand behind the B pillar to avoid being shot. Just an every day thing that has to be considered.
And if they happen to see car parts on the back seat, good observation skills, no deep dark conspiracy that big brother is watching.

Was standing next to a mate today when he rang Repco about an alternator regulator.
Being a mechanic He asked for the part and gave ALL the relevant vehicle details including build date.
First question was what was the rego number. He said you mean the VIN? No rego.
He asked WTF does that matter? Thing is unregistered anyway.
Told him about this thread I saw last night. They weren't interested in the VIN which makes me suspect on why they want the rego info.
In any case, Typically Repco wanted twice what a complete reco alternator was worth even with his trade discount.
Amazing what a 2second search returns
Obviously what all the staff use now too
No doubt a pure time saving exercise
"Australia's First" they say, bahahahaha Toyota been doing it for at least a year, probably a lot longer

spoke to a fella who works for them today and the reason they ask for the rego is
it will bring up the VIN and people remember their rego but have no idea on their VIN
'
As godzilla mentioned and others it is the vin that they need to get the details for any and
all parts for the car
