Default Cable Modem and Router keeps disconnecting

I have been having internet problems with my home setup, thought I would post here and see if anyone has any ideas on what is going on.

I use Optus Cable with a SMC router (has wireless as well).
For the last couple of weeks the internet connection fails. To reconnect I need to go into the Router configuration menu and do a manual "release" and "reconnect".

When I rang Optus they offered at no charge to visit and change out the cable modem. They did this yesterday but the problem is still happening.

I plan on buying a new router tomorrow but I am wondering what should I do if the problem continues after I put it in?

    Hi checkitout,

Mate glad to see I'm not going mad. Check my thread in PC software, sounds like the same dog I'm chasing.

Yes it could be the same but I have not used the USB port on the cable modem.

Also this problem has only started about 2 weeks ago.

I plan to buy a Linksys WRT54GL tomorrow and see if this fixes my problem.

FYI about every 24 hours the router disconnects from the Cable Modem.
In the router control menu I tell it to "release and renew" it reconnects straight away.

Thanks Mate, Its not a ethernet or USB cable issue, I think its linked to Optus somehow.

Usually a faulty Oscilator in the box out side. I would test it with the cable modem alone. Take the rounter out of the picture.

    Thanks Gado

Yes you are right I can take the router out of the picture, but I will have the wife and children complaining having no access to the wireless internet.

I am going to buy a new router anyway - The SMC unit is over 5 years old anyway.

Also if it still fails after the router, then I can ring up Optus and ask them to fix the line or oscillator or whatever.

In regards to this point have you had this experience or do you know that this is a typical problem that might happpen?

    It's actually an isolator.

I don't think the router is at fault, modem possibly, or the other gizmo outside the house.

Put the new router in last night and so far so good.

My internet was playing up at least once a day.

ATM it is all fingers crossed here for me.

Will let you know how this goes.

Not sure if this is coincidence but have had no issues this week connecting...

I suspect you won't have either??

    Default Router problem

HI, I thinks this is a technical problem within the modem/router. This needs to be configured and sorted by the engineers of the company. The router has to be configured properly to avoid disconnection. Also there may be DNS problems.

I have had no issues at all now since putting in the new router.

It could be a coincidence with something happening in the Optus network but at this time I am leaving it as it is.

Thanks for the feedback and advice everyone.
