    Default Is it just me?

    Sorry guys...bit of a rant.

Is it just me, or do you guys also feel like other people around you nowadays (especially in public service, etc.) JUST CAN'T DO ANYTHING RIGHT OR PROPERLY ANYMORE?

Even the most simple and mundane of things!

FROM UNDER WHICH F***CKING ROCK do all these incompetent imbeciles crawl out from? And, how do they find themselves in a position where they can continually frustrate me for years and years?

Aaaaand, why were their parents ALLOWED TO BREED in the first place?

    Congratulations.
You are now officially an "old man".

I define an "old man" by this definition.

A young man believes he can change the world and make it a better place. He gets out there and cracks skulls and gets shit done working hard to make the dream come true.

But then he discovers he is an "old man". He becomes bitter and twisted because he thinks his efforts didn't make things better, they made them worse. (Or he just thinks that they made things worse).

And then you can add to this that the younger generation doesn't understand. That's correct, they don't. Just like the old man didn't understand when he was young.

My Grandmother likes to point out that the young people of today don't understand sacrifice like people did during WW1 and WW2.
I had to correct her. It just looks like that. Boys will be boys. Young men die in wars and young men of today are no different.

The soldiers of WW1 were no more brave and just as stupid. It was an adventure of a life time to them.
And I was no different. I'm Gen X. If I had lived during WW2, there is no way you could have stopped me from climbing into a plane and getting shot down.

Young men are no different today. We just see a lot more man buns because they weren't given the oportunity to fvck up their lives when it mattered least to them.
I still see it in young guys today. They might know better than to die in a pool of mud in WW1, but if the movie Independence Day came true tomorrow and aliens invaded.
I would have to fight off several young guys to get my arse into an F18 just to take a shot at the invaders.

The world isn't worse, it's just different. Stop worrying about out, you should realise by now, you can't change it. You already tried and thought you failed.

    Nope, it's not just you.
Not all people yet but the numbers seem to be steadily increasing.

Some get into these positions because they are what I call 'educated idiots'.
University degree, no real clue what they are doing but because they have a piece of paper that says they do, they get the job.
They can successfully jump through all the rediculous hoops required, usually created by other educated idiots, to land these jobs.
A lifetime of experience quite often means nothing nowdays without that piece of paper, especially in the public service.
These are the same types of idiots that are continuously forcing stupid changes on everyone, usually wasting vast sums of money to enact these changes, simply to justify their own otherwise useless positions.
Others are nothing more than scum that seem to enjoy the power trips, they use their positions in the public service/government to their own advantage, regardless of what it does to someone they decide to target.

I must reluctantly agree with you….to a point.

I would suggest that the vast majority of Public Service (coal face) people are probably more genuine in their efforts these days than ever before.
That has been my experience, at least.

But the same cannot be said as one advances into the ranks of the fat-cats.

Can’t remember exactly which scandal it was, but I only recently asked the missus rhetorically “Doesn’t any bastard do their job properly anymore?”

This was after hearing that famous and oft-repeated line:

“We will investigate all aspects of this unfortunate occurrence, and take whatever steps are necessary to ensure that it never happens again”.

    That is, until it does.

Whether it be industrial accidents, mistreatment of elders and the very young, banking fraud, political corruption, flammable cladding on buildings, government contract stuff-ups,….…..the list is endless.

The prevailing attitude seems to be:

“Oh, shit, the horse has just bolted, now let’s get that bloody barn door closed”.

I try to excuse some of it on the basis that successive governments, in this country at least, have routinely and regularly gutted our public and regulatory agencies at every possible opportunity.

This has all been in the divine cause of privatisation.

The nett result has been a neutered and ineffective public sector, and a private sector that really doesn’t give much of a shit just so long as they’re making a quid out of whatever it is that they’re supposed to be doing.

But underlying all of this is exactly what jma just said above…….a bunch of useless, allegedly educated dickheads who have been promoted into positions of power over the functioning of a real world in which they have absolutely zero experience, and possibly even less interest.

I have to agree, what's the point of the university degree when they can't do the simple job infront of them properly -- which would have required maybe a week's/two weeks' practical training at the most?

Its not just the public service, they are everywhere!
In saying that, there are some people that do their job very well, there are also some that would like to do a better job but the system they have to conform to cripples their best intentions.

But by definition (especially the public services) there are plenty of brain dead morons..... Or just plain lazy.
As if they weren't, they would be self made people kicking big goals and not being drones in the public service.

I have no idea what your personal experience has been, but the public service has been so over governed, i'm surprised it even functions.... oh hang on...

There is a very entertaining movie on this very subject - the cynical would say that it is practically a documentary.

    It is called "Idiocracy"

Watch it, and all will become clear to you

    Idiocracy

Idiocracy is a 2006 American science fiction dystopian comedy film directed by Mike Judge and starring Luke Wilson, Maya Rudolph, and Dax Shepard. The film tells the story of two people who take part in a top-secret military human hibernation experiment, only to awaken 500 years later in a dystopian society where anti-intellectualism and commercialism have run rampant, and which is devoid of intellectual curiosity, social responsibility, and coherent notions of justice and human rights.

If you read the Wikipedia article linked above, take particular note of the paragraph:

In The New York Times, Dan Mitchell argued that Fox might be shying away from the cautionary tale about low-intelligence dysgenics, because the company did not want to offend either its viewers or potential advertisers portrayed negatively in the film.[22] This theory has been given extra weight by Terry Crews, who stars in the movie as President Camacho. In a 2018 Interview with GQ Magazine he talked of advertisers being unhappy at the way they were portrayed, which affected the studio's efforts to promote the movie. He said, "The rumor was, because we used real corporations in our comedy (I mean, Starbucks was giving hand jobs) these companies gave us their name thinking they were gonna get 'pumped up', and then we're like, 'Welcome to CostCo, we love you' [delivered in monotone]. All these real corporations were like, 'Wait a minute, wait a minute' [...] there were a lot of people trying to back out, but it was too late. And so Fox, who own the movie, decided, 'We're going to release this in as few theatres as legally possible'. So it got a release in, probably, three theatres over one weekend and it was sucked out, into the vortex"
Therein lies part of the answer to your issue.

Intelligent, educated, discerning, questioning and capable citizens are in many respects anathema to the prevailing political and corporatist system.

This is the crux of the matter. I have been in the Public Service a couple of times and have seen this first hand. When I was last contracting to them, I viewed them from within but was not actually a part of the club. The skill level is waaay down IMO.

The old public service mantra of "frank advice without fear or favour" was abandoned starting in the 70's. Later governments have just made things worse by continually sacking department heads and replacing them with sycophants. The exceptions to this behavior are rare.
The fact that there's a highway to hell and a stairway to heaven says a lot about the anticipated traffic flow.

And here's another piece of the puzzle:

America’s educational system is an ‘aristocracy posing as a meritocracy’

Low-income kindergartners with high test scores are less likely to become well-off young adults than their higher income-peers with low test scores

The final para pretty much sums it up:

The result, according to Carnevale: “College or postsecondary education has become the capstone in this system that pretty much takes the inequality it finds after high school, reproduces it in the selectivity of the higher-education system, projects all of that into the labor market and then starts that cycle all over again.”

Look at QLD they have just appointed another hang on ministers for the young people that go off the rail. This is bullshit wasting tax paying public money for these leaches that earn a zillion and wont accomplish nothing. Give the Job to me and I guarantee you the youth today will stop offending after I make a example of few of them. This make me sick because the youth today always win because the Pollies are scared to do what is needed to stop the young committing crime.

Time to go off-grid and live fully independent.
...or said slightly differently: Trust no one!
However you need to have acquired all the skills to do that.

These days it looks like the 99% of the population only have one skill: How to stuff up the one thing they are trained and paid to do.
There is still that 1% though, that you might find in the front line of public services like Hospital ER, Fire brigade, etc, so we are not quite at Idiocracy level yet.

I seem to encounter these educated and automated idiots all the time.
Been dealing with one the last 2 days. Even though they agree the situation in question does not make sense within the Policy" , it is policy so that's the way it has to be, counter productive or not. Typical of the automatons one cannot escape these days.

There is no thinking that takes place, just follow the rules and instructions handed down blindly without any regard to the actual circumstances of the situation. Doesn't matter if the decision is right or wrong, as long as you followed the rules and policy's no matter how ridicilous or illogical they may be.
Logic is a very dirty word these days.

I do have to say though, I have been surprised numerous times when having no choice but to visit the ultimate hell on earth of unmitigated incompetence, a service NSW centre.
I have been lucky though. I have watched the incompetents behind the counter with less than no clue contradict themselves and make no sense at all to other poor souls who were frustrated enough to be looking round in disbelief and caught the eyes of other whom were shaking their heads and also couldn't believe what was going on.
Fearing the worst I have had some brilliantly competent staff that could not have been easier, more polite or more efficient. I did comment to one woman how I was thankful and appreciative I got her as observing others behind the counter had me fearing the worst. He retort was " Your fears were Justified" with a look directly at the co worker I had in mind.

There was one woman at the Service NSW centre that was so bad no one would go to her. Everyone in the area seemed to know who she was. When your number came up and it was called by her, people would just go get another ticket till they were summoned by someone else . Things became apparent when there were occasions when she went right through the numbers and no one stepped up at all. She was far from incompetent though, just a mean cold bitch on a power trip looking for excuses to make things hard for people and inventing them when she couldn't find any. I had an encounter with her once. bought a trailer and went in to change the rego before bringing the thing home. She reckoned something on the paperwork wasn't right. I went out, came back 30 Min later, handed the other person the same untouched / no added to documents and went through in 1 min flat with a smile.
When I told others they were anything BUT surprised.

My father was friendly with the manager of the centre and he admitted the complaints about her were endless and ongoing but as she didn't violate any work rules, there was nothing that could be done. Don't know why she left but suffice to say the whole damn town was glad she is gone.

For a very long time, I have never been one to back away from making complaints to staff or their management and I ALWAYS make more of a point to ask for managers when I receive good service.
I'm real quick to complain so bad service is shown up but I'm also fair in that I also take the time to make sure people whom are doing their job well are recognised and hopefully displace the slackers and raise the standards.

Ha ... I had that problem once in the 90's George. I bought a motorcycle and took the rego to the RTA to have it transferred.
I am served by one of my favourite ethinc groups, A full turban Sikh. Everything was in order except one digit, a 0 which the previous owner had written and it looked like a 6.
"This number is not correct, I cannot complete this transaction."

    What? That's a zero.
No, I see a six and it is wrong.
<under my breath> I can see an idiot and that is wrong.

Having spent a lot of time dealing with Soviets and Russians about that time, I learned how to deal with bureaucracy.
"OK, I'll take it and get the previous owner to fix it.
I walk back across the room and grabbed a pen from the desk, made sure it looked like a zero and came back to the line and another teller picked me up.

When the Sikh saw me go to a new teller, he got up and made a big fuss.
    "YOU CANNOT DO THAT!"
    "Do what?"
"YOU CANNOT JUST CHANGE THE DETAILS YOURSELF!"
"I don't know what you're talking about, I've never seen you before in my life!"
"YOU WERE JUST AT MY DESK!"
"I don't know who you are buddy, but if you have a problem with me, I suggest you call the police. Because if you don't I will, because I don't know who you are and you're hostile and threatening behaviour is unacceptable!"

The guy serving me was trying not to crack up laughing. The crowd of ordinary Aussie customers was looking very unimpressed with our Indian friend and one woman gave him a serve. "This guy came in at the same time as I did and you just started abusing him. I think you have some real problems buddy and should sit down and shut the #### up."
Five or six people applaud her.

The guy serving me turns to the Indian and tells him, "Don't worry, I'll handle it." and he goes back to his desk. The guy serving me winks at me and I'm trying not to laugh.
"This all appears to be in order. I pay the money and I'm out the door"
Once I was outside and out of the view of the cameras inside, I gave the the Sikh a hand sign he would know for a small dick just to make sure the rest of his day would be horrible.
Yes I am an agent of Satan, but my duties are largely ceremonial.

I'm real quick to complain so bad service is shown up but I'm also fair in that I also take the time to make sure people whom are doing their job well are recognised and hopefully displace the slackers and raise the standards.
We are always quick to praise Good service, it's the only way to ensure you get help when you encounter the idiots. You catch more flies with honey... so the saying goes.

    NOW for something completely different!
Friend found out at the last minute that he was unable to attend a polling booth on Saturday. At 4PM Thursday he applied online for a postal vote. The paperwork arrived at 10AM the NEXT DAY!!!! Not only one govt dept got their fingers out but TWO! Almost unbelievable
I'm out of my mind, but feel free to leave a message...
