    A big scoop, I think you're overcompensating for something.

    How about we just keep it all small?
    1m2 collecting intake. That's a measly 2x1013 atoms per second.
    All you have to do is impart enough kinetic energy onto each of these protons and let Newton's third law do the rest.
    You also get Einstein working for you with relativistic mass.
    So take one proton and spit it out the exhaust at 0.999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999 9999999999999999999 the speed of light.
    Give that Proton a relativistic momentum of 0.0000001gms-1 (1 microgram metres per second) Doesn't sound like very much does it?
    Multiply that by the 2x1013 atoms per second. 1x10-6ms-1 gives us 10,000kgms-2.

    A little 1 tonne pocket rocket is going to pull you back in the seat a 1G.
    How you generate that much power in a small spacecraft is the question.
    A few million times more energy than the LHC currently uses.

    when we close our eyes we see more than ever , when we open them we see only problems to over come
    hell when i was a young guy i used to think with my eyes closed cos no-one else could see Marilyn Munroe naked in bed with me , there was always a solution on my chest when i opened my eyes , solved that problem huh ?

    [pedant]0.999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999 9999999999999999999? would it not have been easier to write the speed of light? because 0.999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999 9999999999999999999 is sure close enough to 1, or did you really mean .0000000000000000000000000000000000 000000000000000009 the speed of light?[/pedant]

    Believe or not Isemmens there was a reason for that kind of number.
    The difference between 0.999 to 100 decimal places and 101 decimal places is a big difference.
    It looks like splitting hairs from this side of special relativity, but from the other side, very very small differences make very big differences in output.

    So why did I do it? Because I expect anybody to double check the numbers at any time.
    I do make mistakes like the H/He error above. I actually like it when people catch my mistakes before I do.
    In this case if I'd just said 0.999xC I would not be surprised if somebody had crunched the numbers and said, you're a few billion Joules short.
    I would also not be surprised if you actually went off and did it for the number I did give and still said, "you're still a bit short".
    I actually calculated it to 20 decimal places and wasn't happy with the answer, so I just put enough numbers in to discourage you from trying
    You should always be skeptical of what I say. (Or anybody says).

    Reality is I lied and I suspect I'm still short. But yes, the point of the exercise was to just impart enough momentum on each particle to make them effective.
    I had to use a really high precision number to do that. If I'd gone too far and used 1xC, then I would expect everybody to on this forum to point and laugh.
    And using 0.99::: (infinitely repeating) would be infinity short of infinity. ∞ - (1/ ∞) That one makes me laugh even harder because the harder one tries to avoid infinity the closer they get to it.

    So I'm not really being pedantic about about it, I'm just making sure you lot don't look behind the curtain and discover the wizard is just an old man pulling levers the release smoke and move the mirrors.

    Science fiction is fun, but real science is waaaay more cooler.

    This pdf gives some good examples of real micro thrusters currently in use or development.


    And this lady is another of my favourite engineers. I'm making sure a lot of young girls know how cool she is.


    She is Australian and the fuel she uses is Argon canisters from the wine industry.
    When I first saw that description I had the thought of the first goon bag to fly in space.

    Oh! Bugga! She has the job, my eldest would have loved! He was 3/4s of his way through 2 (or was it 3) degrees at Uni and got bored, so he gave up. He now works there, but not in anything nearly so flash.
