Default SBS Viceland SD closing, June 18 2019

    Hi all,

I just saw an ad on SBS Viceland, saying that Viceland HD (which we don't have) will remain, and Viceland SD will be shuttered on June 18.
Not sure where that leaves us. There's more though.

We currently have SBS HD (30), SBS SD (31), Viceland SD (32), Food (33), NITV (34).

Terrestrial is SBS HD (30), Viceland HD (31), Viceland SD (32), Food (33), NITV (34).

The closure of Viceland SD on terrestrial channel 32 makes way for the opening of SBS World Movies HD on 32.

    From SBS, about World Movies:
"The channel will be revived on free-to-air television on 1 July 2019. It will be available on channel 32 in high definition, replacing the standard definition broadcast of SBS Viceland, which continue to broadcast on channel 31 in HD"

Given VAST only has Viceland SD, where does that leave all of us, and what about World Movies HD? We still have SBS HD and SD.. we don't need SD.

Does anyone know anything about what will happen?

    Cheers
    K

Not sure. Hopefully the SBS SD simulcasts will be repurposed for both World Movies HD and Viceland HD.

Yeah I guess we've got 6 days to find out.
What compression is SBS SD and Viceland SD? They are both broadcast 576i, but I'm not sure if they're MPEG2. If so, the powers that be could shove MPEG4 compressed HD streams of Viceland HD in place of SBS SD, and World Movies HD in place of Viceland SD. If they wanted, and if the available bandwidth could handle it.

Or we could just lose Viceland SD and get nothing back.... That's be a shame because they've just started showing X-Files at 7:30pm.

I'm going to try calling SBS tomorrow to see if I can find out more. I don't hold out much hope, but I can only try.

    OK!
I just got off the phone with SBSs transmission people. They knew exactly what I was talking about, confirmed my bouquet (VIC)..
What's happening, officially, on July 1:

SBS SD on 31 will be no more.
Viceland SD will move from to 32 to 31, staying as SD.
SBS World Movies (new channel) will be on 32 as SD.

TERRESTRIAL gets Viceland and World movies in HD... And we get screwed... But at least we get a new channel!

    Cheers

Ok, the juggling is all done.

The bonus is, we got World Movies in HD on 32!
    Hoorah.

The sad news is that once again the hearing impaired are only catered for with Closed Captions for the foreign movies (love them) not all the movies
