Toyota faces class action over claims Hilux, Prado have faulty diesel filters
A class action filed in the Federal Court today could affect up to 250,000 Toyota drivers nationwide, including owners of Australia's top-selling car — the Hilux.

Yes, that's the beast....although most of the discussion has been about the problems experienced by Toyota owners......see this thread:
Most DPF filters seem to share a common problem....that being that repeated slow urban driving doesn't allow high enough temperatures to develop to complete a full burn-off of the particles in the filter.
In the case of Toyota, it would seem from the scuttlebutt that there may be additional technical problems with their particular unit....this has been exacerbated by the fact that they failed to provide a facility (switch) to permit the owner to initiate a manual burn (such as is fitted to my 2017 Hiace).
Overall, I think the problem is twofold:
New technology tacked onto an existing product and hastily introduced to the market without adequate testing, and
Inadequate information to users about the purpose of the technology and how it affects, and needs to be managed by, the end user.
How many people these days actually understand what is going on underneath the bonnet?

Can also happen to vehicles driving up to fall creek!! Doesn't just affect urban cowboys!
Shhhh! Is there anyway to bypass said filter without it being too obvious? Shhh? I didn't ask that, and nobody told me about it.
I'm out of my mind, but feel free to leave a message...

I'm talking about other vehicles not Toyotas. For example we used to see Subarus towed to us from Falls Creek with blocked DPFs.

Seems like the Subaru has had DPF problems for quite a while.......lots of stuff on the 'net about it, particularly Europe.
Plenty of offers of DPF removal but, like most other desirable things in life, it's illegal.
One comment on a European site that caught my eye was:
Crossing water (creeks)
Since DPF sits down low and gets very hot (> 650°C, 1170°F) during active regeneration, getting in contact with water it may warp due to temperature shock and therefore be destroyed according to Australian forums.
So, you can take your nice shiny new 4WD out into the bush and go wherever you like.....just be sure not to get it wet.
Dammit! What have they done to the ol' ever-reliable, go-anywhere diesel engine ?
Effects lots of euro cars as well, a mate had a diesel Alfa and it would constantly have DPF issues even though he did a long commute with 50% highway driving, a new DPF was quoted at $4.5k.
a lot of arguments for petrol cars
I haven't owned a petrol vehicle for a very long time.........but one hiccup with the DPF on my Hiace, and I'll have to have a long, hard think about it.
Maybe that's the been the plan all along......make diesel so damn unreliable and expensive that it becomes a no-brainer
we took the petrol option when buying a small car a few years back. 6l/100km long term average is pretty good.
There has been talk that DPF's might get used in petrol cars soon so upcoming euro emmissions stds can be met !! Electric will be the way to go soon.
I've been running fg falcon Ute's for 10 years.
They average 10.5 to 11 l/100km.
Motors good for at least 600000km, twice the average of a new diesel.
Ive tried Triton, amarok, hilux diesels, none get better economy when loaded up.
Yes, they're better when empty, but when loaded up the little diesels are very thirsty.
2 amaroks blew up before 200k, Tritons last 300k, hiluxes had rooted injectors at 30k.
I just bought a new 2019 hilux petrol with 6 speed auto.
What a piece of shit, auto gearbox won't go into 6th on the Hwy when empty. On an 80km highway trip it went into 6th twice for a few seconds. It stays in 5th and converter doesn't lock up.
It will randomly kick back to 4th and stay there all day. Manual mode does not work.
Toyota said nothing wrong with it.
I just traded it for a new 2019 diesel auto Triton.
At least it goes into 6th....
Economy empty not bad with egr delete cable.
My oldest fg now has 992000km on it, second motor and original zf 6 speed....
