    Default Offset dish /LNB

    Hi Second query

My Mum has a MySat Package which is pointing at Intelsat 19KU satellite at 166 deg East and the Optus D1 is at 160 deg is it just a matter of getting an offset bracket with another LNB and using the same dish to get the Foxtel Signal?

I remember doing something like this back ages ago.....

Obviously it would mean bringing my spare box over to her place.....

    Cheers

Yes. You can get a secondary LNB holder that attaches and with the C1/D3 or whatever it is now being such a strong signal you'll have no probs having that LNB offset and getting a good signal.

I've used this kit in the past to get all sorts of combinations on 70-90cm dishes :

Can't remember where I bought mine some years back, but this ebay bloke is the only one I could find for sale in Oz at the moment.

They're a good setup.....you can adjust the second LNB in all axes.

You should leave your dish pointed at IS19 - that is the much weaker signal....the second LNB shouldn't have any problem with the Optus birds at that setting.

Foxtel is not on Optus D1

Foxtel is on the co-located Optus D3/D10 sats @ 156.0°E which actually makes it a tad easier for physical separation of the two LNB's.

As Thala Dan said, leave the dish/LNB aligned for the best IS19 signal.

The type of setup works best on dishes of 80cm or larger and a lot depends on the location your mum is in.

Thanks for the clarification MTV about D3, now for alignment purposes any tips??

I mean 10 degrees of separation sounds bugger all so on an LNB bracket that would equate to ??

I would leave the dish where it is and just hold an LNB by hand and see if you can get anything first.

It would be good to start with something like dishpointer () get both satellites' bearings/azimuth from your specific location and go from there. Also, this will give you elevation and LNB skew for your specific location, which is also crucial.

Even with all this though, then you still need to fine-adjust everything of course for peak signal.

It’s actually a bit more than ten degrees on the ground – depending on your location.

From my location (NE Vic), the Optus birds are at 11° Azimuth and IS19 is at 30° Azimuth…..so a dish swing of around 20°.
But, that’s a bit academic….providing the difference isn’t so big that your dish can’t see both targets.

The following diagram illustrates something like what your layout should look like:

Notice that the Optus LNB is on the OPPOSITE side of centre to where the Optus birds are located….from the diagram you can see why.

The Optus birds are located higher in elevation (47°) than IS19 (43°)….this means that your Optus LNB will be slightly LOWER than your IS19 LNB……you can see that everything about the off-centre satellite is reversed at the LNB receiving it.

The Optus LNB, having been located on the opposite side of the dish, and lower than the IS19 LNB, should then be rotated slightly inward toward the centre of the dish.

Before you go to too much trouble mounting things though, you should do as Leroy suggests and just fiddle around with the Optus LNB hand-held in the approximate position to see if you can pick up a signal……just a flash of signal on the screen, or meter, as you move the LNB around will tell you that you’re in with a chance.

    Good luck.

Thanks Guys as usual excellent responses.

@ Leroy, great tip very helpful for getting a general idea of where I should be starting at.
@ Dr Mohs, nice app never seen it before and also very useful which flows onto
@ Thala Dan if you take your diagram and move it 30 degrees to the right thats how it looks for Mums place according to dishpointer, elevation is very similar too

Instant satellite lesson Cheers guys well done, now I just gotta do it, this should be interesting................
