I had to load Windwoes on my lappy yesterday to try and unbrick a phone. a) the unbrick did not work, and b) it took over an hour just to get windwoes ready to try said program. Upon re-start, I then had to wait about 5 minutes after the desktop appeared for it to be "useful"
I'm glad I had a spare drive that I installed it on. It took me less time to remove said windwoes drive and re-install Linux drive and re-boot into linux than it took me to get to a "windwoes is loading screen" Actually, a cold boot into linux only takes me 20 seconds before I am ready to work.
I'm out of my mind, but feel free to leave a message...

Something broken in that copy of Windows perhaps?
I seem to remember in the past Windows didn't like it's boot drives being swapped out...though perhaps that's no longer an issue with M$ OS's?
Win7 I can get to a usable desktop in around a minute from a cold boot on an old Toshiba Satellite L300, about the same time in a VM.

Why did you need windows to unbrick the phone?
Surely all OS can do that?

The only software that offered to do it was WIndwoes based.

    Phil,

I think the type of people who use a free operating system are the type of people who are too tight to update their hardware....

W10 installs and runs fine on any decent spec modern hardware but will struggle on anything 5 years or older, even with more ram and ssd etc.

I have no problem with Linux, I just don't need to use it.....

Actually the machine I am typing on has an I5 proc, 8Gb RAM and a 250Gb SSD. If that is underpowered....... I rest my case!!!!

FWIW the oldest machines I have were all running w10 until I shifted to Linux. THe reason I shifted, was Patch Tuesday in January last year! It was the straw that broke the camel's back. Up until then one or two of my machines might hiccup on Patch Tuesday and were generally fixed fairly quickly. That particular Tuesday, all of my machines had a hissy fit and the only solution at the time was a complete system re-load!!! At that time the newest machine had been shipped with W10 on it, so it was not an "old" machine at all. My oldest machines were shipped with XP and I do/did not expect blinding performance from them. The have certainly been way more stable since I've installed Linux Mint Cinnamon on them (this is the heaviest on resources version of Linux Mint).

    That is rubbish.
I remember a while ago Admin proudly claiming he had W10 running OK for him on a Core 2 and I actually believe him.
Core 2 is very ancient(2006) but in the past 5 years processor-wise nothing much has happened.
The only hardware improvement hardware-wise is that SSD have become very affordable as has heaps of DRAM(that most don't need) and Graphic cards use less energy.
    That's about it.
We don't have Quantum computers yet.

I've tried various Distro's over the past few months, including Versions of Manjaro, Ubuntu and Mint. They all use too many system resources, upto and over 1gb ram on boot.

I've finally settled on the Distro pictured below. Using less than 500mb and under 1gb with a bunch of Firefox tabs opened. It's also more responsive than the other Distro's.

Ain't Linux grand, you don't like the way something is done, just change distros. Can't do that with any other OS....

I dunno Ive seen windows 10 slow a Asus i7 with 16 gb ram and all the bells and whistles ( SSD, Exxternal Drive ) with to a crawling halt. While on many other computers I have been able to speed up windows ten by doing a setup that bypasses or disables many of the functions that most users never use, on this particular laptop I could not get it to perform well at all.

IMO W10 was just another step in the wrong direction fro windows. I am a Mac hater yet i am using a mac because when my windows 7 support died out it was either that or windows 10.

Sorry op im not giving you any answers here but that W10 is a wildcard at best. ( from a ex windows fanboy )

Why do you not try Linux MINT?

Because I am happy with the version I'm using.

And - I already have Mint on another computer.

Guess what! I am happy with that also.

    I'm a doubly happy chappy!

Unfortunately had to keep W10 due to young daughter and school apps. Education department heavily push Windows, tolerate OS but shun Linux.

When it does a update while you don't have your power cable nearby and have set update install times and it starts the update while you are doing a demo for a client and tells you please dont turn of power... brilliant stuff

Technically that is not true, but I know what you mean

This has little to do with our Education department pushing anything.
It is (as usual) all about Google becoming even more prevalent. They will not supply Google Classroom for general Linux distros.

Schools are actually encouraging parents to purchase Chromebooks, not Windows PCs for E-classes.
Chrome OS is a Linux distro from Google.
