Well, after 34 years of using Microsoft Windows, I have finally removed it from my two main PC's and installed.....wait for it.....Linux!
Up until a few months ago, I had been running Windows 8.1 Pro Update 1 with very few problems, all of which were minor and thus tolerable.
In the last several months however, Microsoft has worked overtime to produce patch after patch after patch, some of which took considerable time to download and become resident.
Having become used to Linux some years ago, I decided it was time.
I am now happily running Linux on a desktop and notebook computer as well as continuing to use a Mac tower, which naturally, uses OS X.
Enough is enough.
Microsoft, you finally wore me down!

I admire your patience and perseverance to hold on so long
Once in a blue moon I get melancholic and fire up a Windows machine when I need to get some old tech done. Then suddenly some unexpected behaviour and I quickly get tired of it again.
The things I can do today with MAC in regards to music production is mind blowing and I could never be able to sort this all out on windows.
Actually it was music production that first got me hooked on a real computer, the Atari ST with mouse and windows and hi res screen long before Microsoft Windows and it all worked very well.
Then work demanded I buy a PC with VGA monitor and use first DOS then Windows when it finally came out.
At some stage the Atari was out dated and I had to use Windows for music production. It was an everlasting pain in the arse, although I used the same but upgraded software Steinberg Cubase that was used in the Atari. I literally stop doing anything musical any more.
Then things got worse when I dared to venture in Video production, paying $2000 for digitiser and compression cards and awful to get anything halfway running properly. OK now we were talking Win95, although I was also doing this before with 3.11.
I did a few musicals later in the early 2000s with WinXP that worked out OK but getting all the hardware to respond correctly still took days.
It took me years later to concede that Windows was never designed to be anything other than a luxury typewriter, speak Office/Internet but even that didn't always do what i wanted it to do.
Ubuntu in the early stages 2005 when I did the switch was no walk in the park either, but it was always more hopeful. Solutions were found and when you got it working it stayed like that.
MAC was much later as I couldn't afford one back then but when the powerful machines became available second hand for reasonable price I discovered Logic X and now music production is a breeze with mind blowing sound and effects. Everything just works out of the box. I keep discovering more and more sound software for the MAC and I can create cinematic soundtracks in way that I can not describe with words. I virtually also have the Abbey Roads Studios with high end instruments and sound chambers and I am in a different world.
Then I remember the time I just wanted to connect more than one music keyboard to a Windows machine and play through it's sound module, I would start ripping my hair out.

Macs used to be better at Music production and DTP than Windwoes. These days, I don't know. Welcome to the freedom that Linux brings. Which version did you install?
I'm out of my mind, but feel free to leave a message...
I maybe 5 PC's here with Windows on them
4 have not been turned on in 10 years
1 gets used for OBD stuff rarely

Absolutely positive.
My parents taught me that Windwoes refers to flatulence or indigestion.
But having said that, my mind does make the connection.
No more Windwoes for me!

Browsing, Banking, Youtube (4K video downloader also available for Ubuntu), PIA, Android connects ... all top.
Malware and Virus, practically non existent, while technically possible but not practical for too many reasons to explain here.
Browser popups and spyware, tracking and security flaws are the same as with any other OS.
So you need to make sure you stay up to date there and use good browsers that block these things, so stay away from Google Chrome but Vivaldi that uses the Chrome engine is good as is Firefox. Unfortunately Epic, the ultimate safe browser that blocks all trackers, leaves no fingerprinting, built in country proxies, etc, is not available for Linux
Hence the reason why I use the MBP as my main machine these days.
If you never installed Ubuntu before, keep in mind you get a system automatically fully loaded with everyday software and apps.
You would have to run into really bad luck these days if the built-in Wifi of an old XP laptop is not supported, but dongles are a dime a dozen. More annoying if sleep does not work properly, which can happen on some older laptops.
Not if you want to install Windows applications or specialised professional applications.Maybe not so good for applications
1000's of free apps directly accessible with the Discover app.
BTW I have always been a KDE man, which Ubuntu calls Kubuntu. I have used openSUSE a lot where KDE was the default. All my kids grew/are growing up with Linux as well as Mac and Windows. They all know how to use the command line, two of them now better than me. I got to watch that they are not SSHing into my systems nicking my crypto

Since installing Linux Mint, I've never had a problem with pop ups or the other stuff that is common to all OS's, that doesn't mean that they are not a problem, but seem less so in Linux. My banking and other financial things are all done on-line, and I've never had an issue. The only caveat that I would have is that I never store my bank details, in my browsers. Not even a shortcut to my bank. I always type the address and my login details reside in only one place. It they want to steal them, they've got to cut my head off!

Unique Features
Zorin OS is a powerful and secure OS that has been specifically designed to replace Windows and MacOS. It almost mimics Windows OS in many aspects like having a task bar at the bottom, system menu on the left side and tray icons on the bottom right side. Zorin OS 12 is the latest release from the stables of Zorin group and the OS is based on the famous Debian Ubuntu.

Zorin layout looks basically like any KDE version of Linux I have been using for decades.
I always had the impression that KDE was ahead of Windows with some pretty far out desktop features, that were also quite demanding on the hardware but you didn't have to enable them.
Very sure Windows picked up some of their stuff back then.
KDE has become more streamlined in the later years as nobody really needed these crazy cube desktops and "Aero" features.
Looked a bit deeper, Zorin is propriety (pay ware) cost US$39, which I assume has something to do with the inclusion of play-on-Linux.
Not sure I would want to go online with a pirated torrent OS and do banking/trading.
'Black Editions' of Windows are fine for me because I NEVER go online with any Windows version and they DO turn Windows into something more useful.

Doesn't look unlike My Mint - Cinnamon Desk layout.

I've made my Ubuntu desktop look exactly like Mac OS El-Capitan.
True freedom is the greatest gift a man can possess, yet is the one thing most easily and innocently given away, to crafty curses and binds cleverly disguised as blessings and gifts, in the pursuit of supposed achievement, status and power.

I won't use Ubuntu or anything based on Ubuntu nowdays, Canonical = corporate greed.
10.04.? was the last I used, I did upgrade to the 12.? LTS but hated with a passion the Unity interface that was forced on everyone.
Within a couple of hours I had it replaced, haven't touched it since.
Nowdays I prefer to use something that's Debian only based, by that I mean a system that uses Debian stable as a base and builds onto that, not something that's based on something that's based on something that's based on something else etc. etc...
Currently I use MX-Linux as my main system and have been for several years, it's based on Debian stable, uses SysVinit instead of Systemd and the support forum is really good.

The snapshot feature is very handy, quite a few options available as to what a snapshot contains.
I use it when setting up a new system for someone, usually those who are technologically challenged, pensioners etc..
Install the OS, set it up how they want it then make a snapshot of it before letting them loose on it.
Then if they break something it doesn't turn into a major drama if it's not easily fixed, simply boot from the snapshot then install it, 10 or 15 minutes later they have their system installed exactly as it was when the snapshot was created.
I also use it for a full system backup, it can literally save a snapshot of your running system exactly as it is at the time, all personal files and folders, installed software, settings, customisations etc. etc.
If a reinstall is needed for any reason then within minutes your OS can be back exactly the way you like it with little to no effort.
You can create a live USB of MX & boot your computer from it.
This is a good way to have a look at, test if hardware's compatible, or simply play around with an OS as it runs from the USB & does not need installing.
Safest way to try out an OS but still keep the original computer/OS untouched.
