I learned today that solder containing lead 60/40 will be banned in Australia at the end of this year.
After that you will only be able to buy the lead free crap.
I stocked up today. Rockby electronics is good for price too.

Last year I bought 12Kg of Kester Sn60Pb40 from the USA.
On the rolls it states that LEAD is known to the State of California to cause cancer and reproductive harm, so it should be fine to use everywhere else

This was supposed to happen many years ago, so I stocked up.
The unleaded version is useless.

THe amount of Solder that I use, I should be right for the next century! I've still got a roll that I got in the 90's that is hardly used.
I'm out of my mind, but feel free to leave a message...
Hmmm.... ok, have to check my stock.
Just ordered a few more rolls so should be covered for at least another decade at the current (low) rate of consumption. This ban will have to cover the solder bars for plumbing etc too I guess so better get some of that as well for the little solder pot which is likely to be useless with the leadfree stuff.

Stocking up? Nar, I'll just by it from China and India.
I also welcome the rise in tin whiskers. It'll make repairing busted shit even easier.
Yes I am an agent of Satan, but my duties are largely ceremonial.
Rockby had a recent special on solder too. Might go make a purchase or two...
Anyone know any good solder available on flea bay to stock up on?

what the offical source of this info , seems based on rumour ?????
I'm not sure about that, but one thing I've found is buy it from someone who sells a lot of it (the same with buying batteries). Old solder may have tarnished with age and becomes harder to use, and might even need extra flux to get a good joint. Better to throw it out and get new stuff.
Bought brand new from different sources. Fasttech has a large turnaround. All rubbish. Flux is shit, never makes a shiny surface, doesn't flow properly, sticky messy shit, tried all temps.
With Kester 60/40 I can make almost perfect balls that shine like polished steel.
The US military uses it for a reason, and so do I.
I still had a tiny bit of solder left from Germany that I used 30 years ago. It does not age and flows perfect. I use it as a reference to find proper solder and the only match I found was Kester.
Solder is the life line of electronics, if it fails, everything fails. I might as well give up electronics and spend the rest of my life getting pissed if I have to use shit solder.
I buy a lot of stuff from China and some of it is not so bad at all, but solder, mechanics, and batteries: mark my words, steer clear from them.
Most Chinese electronics these days is double sided PCB machine soldered, even their cheap stuff. That is a different story and I assume it is lead free, which works well in automated processes but never goes well for hand soldering.

And of course. Jaycrap and Allpoo. don't sell Chinese made solder at ripoff prices!! Easy to make own flux. Soak pine cones in metho. Use phosphoric acid diluted another one.
Agreed! I got some 0.3mm "60/40" for SMD work - which turned out to be 62/37 (and what was the other 1%??) - horrid stuff. Doesn't flow nicely, doesn't set shiny or smooth, all the joints made with it look like they're verging on cold joints.
Never had a problem with Consolidated Alloys solder though - good quality stuff.
As I do very little electronics work these days, my use of solder has become somewhat limited.
I still have an almost full reel (500 gm) of Multicore 0.71mm 60/40, which flows nicely and produces a good end result.
There's also a small quantity of .3mm (some years old) for finer work.
Somewhere in the bowels of my shed, I should have a stick or two of plumbers solder used for soldering gutters and such like.
