Default Finally state funds well invested:

A first time for the NSW state government money wasters and this must surely treat the Text 'n Drive addicts:

<<<The Government said and more than 100,000 drivers were found to be using their phones illegally.>>>

At $400 a hit that would be almost half of the investment already returned!

Personally it should be $1000 but I wonder if the police will be allowed to use their phone whilst driving because I have seen at least 2 in the last year or so.

Don’t know about NSW but take a look at rule 305 of the Victorian Road Rules..........that rule is there so as police are able to do things that civilians are not allowed to do, within reason.

I don’t know your experience in law enforcement Mr672A but not everything that police do can be done while stationary.

Personally, if it can be avoided, I will not use my phone while working/driving as I think it is hypocritical. However that said, there have been times when I have had no choice but to be on the phone while driving, sometimes at high speed.

I have no problem with police doing what they have to do to perform their jobs, they would be confronted with unsavoury situations that I wouldn't want to be a part of at any time, and they do so on a daily basis and mostly in the eye of the public, if they need to get on the phone to help them do their job then I don't have a problem with it at all, but you are right, the rest of us shouldn't be doing it at all, and I agree fine us big.

I posted once on here of an incident where I nearly had a head on with a patrol car because the female cop was on the phone on a bend. If her partner hadn't reached across and yanked the wheel it would have been a definite.

    I had nowhere to go.....

@porkop...I really appreciate the position you might find yourself in, but are you truly covered if there is a serious incident? Even a death? Dan the man would probably throw you under the bus.
The fact that there's a highway to hell and a stairway to heaven says a lot about the anticipated traffic flow.

The question I would ask here is if there are 2 in the vehicle and she was driving, why wasn’t the other cop using the phone, my comment above still stands, but I did qualify it by saying if they need to, but in the case you refer to enf, I can’t see the need if there is a second cop in the car who could do it.

Because it was a personal call. Not Police business.

For police business their phone would be through the car kit and hands free.

If 'twere a personal call then the same rules could/should apply. Cops are only allowed to "break the rules" in the performance of their duty.
I'm out of my mind, but feel free to leave a message...

I don’t know how you can be sure of that Reschs even though I suspect you are probably right, however I will say that in the job I’m in we are all allocated mobiles and when there are 2 of us together in the one vehicle it’s the drivers phone that goes through the car hands free kit.

During the past week alone I have been sitting in traffic and have witnessed two, albeit relatively minor, collisions due to one involved party using a mobile phone. Another near miss at a shopping centre almost resulted in a phone using driver drive across a crossing, collecting a couple of small kids.

While I agree with the cameras, more should be done to curb phone usage.

The Govt claims texting/looking at a phone is more dangerous than drink driving, yet the penalty is substantial less. If mobile phone usage is as dangerous as drink driving, bring in the same penalty, being an automatic 3-month suspension, larger fine and more demerit points.

    to quote Rule 305.........

305 Exemption for drivers of police vehicles
    (1) A provision of these Rules does not apply to the driver of a police vehicle if—
    (a) in the circumstances—
    (i) the driver is taking reasonable care; and
(ii) it is reasonable that the provision should not apply; and
    (b) if the vehicle is a motor vehicle that is moving—the vehicle is displaying a blue or red flashing light or sounding an alarm.
big disclaimer is (i) and (b)

your right. Everything is always honky dory until the shit hits the fan!!!
