So - I have just bought a house with a large dish mounted on the garage by previous owner I estimate it to be about 1.8 to 2m in diameter. ( i can upload a pic if required)
My questions are:
Can I use this to connect to satellite and receive free channels?
or
Do I need to subscribe to a service and pay,
What components do I need e..g STB or Receiver etc?
Is there a site or forum that lists all of teh available satellites and their services I can browse to see if I am really interested.
TIA
Best regards
DJ

Yes, you will need a receiver.
Many services require a paid subscription, but there are some free channels available.
It depends on the particular satellite the dish is pointed at and your location, which you haven't mentioned.
Is the dish fixed or motorised?
A dish of that size was more than likely set up to receive C-Band... satellites, very common if former house owners were ethnics, there're hundreds of free channels out there but very few english language... Unlike the domestic Foxtel subscription service which uses the higher frequency Ku Band, you can not subscribe to the encrypted services because they are mainly used for distribution to other pay tv providers.
There're a whole range of receiver ranging from basic DVB S2 receiver going for $50.- to a more sophisticated tech savvy Android or Linux type going for as much as $.-250 so if you are a newbie id say $100 would do you fine.
See...
