I could never understand why they just didn't roll out HD mpeg4 from day 1.

Because at that time, there were virtually no TV's with mpeg4 tuners and very few STB's that were mpeg4-capable and the ones that were back then were extremely expensive.

I agree though, it would have been better to have planned for the future to begin with.

When DTV was rolled out we had to buy something regardless. I've bought stuff with SD tuners, HD mpeg2 tuners, now HDmpeg4 tuners.....

Spare a thought for those of us living in the "VAST Zone" please comrades. This will be another big miss for remote viewers - whilst 7mate is currently broadcast in 1080i on VAST, the main channel 7 remains in SD. The VAST commercial broadcasters, Southern Cross and Imparja continue to transmit the main channels from source broadcasters, ie 9, 10 and 7, in completely unwatchable SD.

Thank god for the NBN and catch up TV!

I wonder what the "other areas" are to have 7mate HD transmitted on channel 64?

    7mate HD
A full-time high definition simulcast of 7mate will be launched on 16 January 2020.
The service will be broadcast in 1080i HD in an MPEG-4 format on digital channel 74, replacing the previously-closed 7food network.
The channel will be available on the Seven Network's owned-and-operated stations ATN Sydney, HSV Melbourne, BTQ Brisbane, SAS Adelaide, TVW Perth and STQ Queensland.

The 'other areas' or 'some regional areas' would be Sunshine Coast and Toowoomba only. They're part of STQ in regional Queensland, but they use the 6 and 60-69 number range instead of 7 and 70-79. Unfortunately it doesn't mean 7mate HD will be available on 64 in Prime and Southern Cross areas. That slide is only seen on the Seven Network.
