What about a laptop like I've always done well with Grays, of their current stuff.

Very interested in Grays as a source, Leigh - thanks heaps !
But not the HP: I've been strongly warned off HP. :\

I'd be interested to know their reasoning. I've no issues with any of the HP devices I've owned. Desktops, Laptops, Printers. I hope you are aware that Grays is an auction house, so, like all auctions Caveat Emptor.

"hp now who purposely make it enclose so you can diy or if you do, you need a physics degree to open it."
Thus speaks Philquad, who has, like your good self, been posting on AusTech for roughly an ĉon ..
    Go bash the bastard. [grin]

And yes, I am thanks Leigh: no flies on me, eh ?

some of the old 1s are ok, do consider its a 2012 laptop tho, bit of a brick (2.91kg) compared to nowadays, battery life? no ssd
if thats your budget, well you buy what you can
theres no shortage on 2nd hand jobs

your ideal will set you back 480 min, but its new, weighs 4.3 pounds (2kg?)

i just read up on windows 10 s mode, sounds scary but can be swapped over with ease, i think they made it for linux users, to break them in easy, without confusing them too much

That is about the same vintage as my laptop. I, personally, don't see HP devices as anything more difficult to modify as any other brand. Each manufacturer does make modifications to their hardware in the interests of compact "storage" (i.e. making all the components fit). For performance I'd be looking at a minimum of 8Gb RAM and a SSD. Of course that all depends upon where and how you want to store your data.

    Hey! Phil! Consider yourself bashed

Just a bit of a curio here for those (like myself) who really abhor too many cables ~ a number of years ago now (5 or more), Samsung made the SE208BW smart media center thingy, which supported optical drives and connected to host systems via wifi. It never got good reviews, hardly anyone bought one (so they're quite rare in the wild). but the idea was there...for a couple of scant years, before everyone (including Samsung) saw the future of optical drives disappearing fast, being replaced by sdcard removable media & online streaming services. Now, optical drives/media are going down the same technological hole LP records, VHS tapes, and even music CDs fell into. It would still be possible to DIY your own wifi connected optical drive, however awfully OT here =)

    Nail on head, mate !
I DETEST the portable drive for that reason, as well as the utter mindless stupidity of having to press a knob directly underneath the slide-out tray - insanity rules ok, as once would've been said.
But this is way too technical for moi.
Still, there are them wot understand it on this fred, I'm sure.

    if you want cheap

prob with the amazon 1 besides the obvious is, no ssd, whos doing that for you? lee lol
you'll probly lock him up in the basement
just my opinion, but if you go 2nd, it needs a ssd, common practice now, & itll need a battery, i bet

new is great, except they go from $400 for basic then 500 with ssd, thats actually worth $33.
hence buying one with removeable panels for easy hdd upgrades.

I got to that part just after I'd coerced a friend into driving me there. She said "Yeah, I was wondering .." when I admitted it.
I can't really shop around Phil: I'm buggered if I know what to look for (other than SSD and onboard DVD).
Erhm .. I almost hesitate to ask this, but .. could you elucidate on that last bit please ? - where/how ?
