Would it be possible to purchase same, d'you reckon ?
I was sold a new Acer a year or so back, and I detest it: (1) portable DVD player; (2) no indication of case - infuriating when logging in anywhere; (3) keyboard that lights up. Ugh.
So OK mebbe it's me - I'll wear that. But I would SO love to have a different laptop ! - if it had a built-in DVD player. I find the portable one so user-unfriendly, in terms of where the start button is in relation to the in/out tray that I can't help wondering why anyone would choose to buy one.
Also: I was given a brand new 256gb iPad Mini Wi-Fi rose gold. I don't want it because I'm too old to start learning another O/S. Windows suits me fine (although I would love to've learned one of the Linuxes a thousand years ago last week).
And there's this bloody Acer Aspire 5 with its useless (to me) terabyte of storage.
Sighh ..
Am I being totally ridiculous ? - dreaming ? - fantasising ?
You can tell me.

I generally purchase my laptops at govt auctions for a fraction of the price of similar specced items new. My current one only cost about $100 and came with 8Gb RAM 128Gb SSD I5 Proc with BluRay/CD/DVD drive.
You may need a genuine Windwoes to install on such, but I now only use Linux, so is not an issue. You do realize that You can try Linux without installing anything on your system?System: Host: leigh-HP-ProBook-470-G2 Kernel: 5.0.0-37-generic x86_64 bits: 64

Thanks, Leigh: if my former (super !) IT bloke up in Sydney doesn't get back to me re a Dell we discussed on the phone earlier, I'll look into government auctions.
That could be fun ! - well, except for the O/S installing part ..
Yes, you told me that on another Fred. I can only insist that I'm far too much of a dickhead to do anything about Linux. I do wish but.
I'll tell thee everything I can: there's little to relate ...
dont be so negative you can do it its real easy to install and you wont look back at winwoes again
Ah, you're here again, too, eh ? - g'day !
You blokes keep telling me how easy it is; but right from the start of looking at Linux I'm in Confusionland ..
Which version is right for whatever laptop I end up with ?, for instance.

Uh-oh .. Just remembered that bloke called admin who crapped on me in that other Fred for being off-topic.
I shall start another Fred in a far better place with regard to everything Linux.

i often buy lenovo for budget ppl, some dont like them but ive had no issues & they often have separate panels underneath which is great for upgrades
unlike hp now who purposely make it enclose so you can diy or if you do, you need a physics degree to open it.

Ho. Optional, eh ? - then more moolah. Sighh ..
I might wait to see what my IT-guy-that-I-had-when-I-lived-in-Sydney tells me tomorrow .. He's trustworthy, and has a reconditioned Dell ..

Lenovo are favoured by the Linux gurus on the forum I inhabit. They seem to have the fewest compatibility issues. i.e. Linux support. I've had no issues with Toshiba or HP, but I may have been lucky too. I might ask, why you are so keen on an optical drive? I must admit, that none of my drives have seen a disk in I can't remember how long. I don't even use a DVD player. That function is handled by my server's blu Ray Player, which is connected to a TV but has never been used. All of my movies reside on HDD or I watch the likes of Netflix.

I've had to get rid of nearly everything we owned, Chic and I, during my bevy of moves: Sydney>down here - Manifold Heights; Manifold Heights>the edge of the CBD; CBD>St Albans Park; St Albans Park>Herne Hill; Herne Hill>St Albans Park; St Albans Park>North Geelong .. and almost every time divesting myself of more stuff. The last lot I gave away (via Gumtree) was the things that sat under the TV - amp, speakers, CD player and DVD player - because they were really old, and there wasn't enough room for them. All I had left was the small-but-delightful 2011 Sony Bravia and my Dell Inspiron laptop with onboard optical drive. Then I spilled coffee on the Dell: I couldn't believe I'd actually done that !
Put myself in the hands of a highly recommended IT place to get a replacement. Well over $900 for this crapulous Acer Aspire with a portable DVD drive. No words can describe how much I loathe them both.
So I want to revert to being as I was before, in one way at least: able to slip DVDs into my laptop without the need for another bloody cable stuck into a USB slot.
