Yeh a missle hit an engine damaging the turbo fan blades causing it to explode.
Leaders of the west are calling it an accident. Not the Iranians but various leaders. Why give Iran the benefit off the doubt?
If it was full of Americans would they just accept this?

At this stage nothing is confirmed until they find physical evidence of the missile in the wreckage.
146 passengers were travelling under Iranian passports.
A convenient accident for Trump.
But had there been any US Americans on board, his tone would have changed significantly and 'retaliation' could be on the table again.

Some aviation dude on the news yesterday arvo said that the photos he had seen of the damaged engine cowl clearly showed shrapnel puncture damage that indicated that the shrapnel had originated from the inside of the cowl and exited to the outside....further that the photos indicated that shrapnel had punctured the fuselage from the outside, possibly the same shrapnel that had exited the engine cowl.
Worth noting that it is reported that the plane was service only two days before the incident.
We used to have a saying in the electronics game when servicing that said when looking for a fault always look first where the fingers had last been.
Dunno if that applies to planes though.
Edit: Just sat down to watch the midday news (been on a chainsaw since 0600 getting ready for the onslaught) - seems as though current intelligence suggests that a missile was involved - if true, once again begs the question why do civilian planes keep flying in what are essentially war zones?

yep just serviced and apprentice left the sump plug loose!
Some linkies, please, otherwise all this is, is just speculation. I could say that the pilot chucked his coffee cup out the window and the engine decided to try it.
I'm out of my mind, but feel free to leave a message...
Justin Trudeau says intelligence shows Iran shot down Ukrainian plane, footage emerges of midair explosion
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau says he has intelligence that Iran shot down a Ukrainian jet on Wednesday, killing all 176 people on board, while new footage has emerged showing a midair explosion.
The footage from an unknown source appears to show an explosion close to Ukraine International Airlines flight PS752's last transponder position.
It shows a bright object moving through the sky before a burst of light can be seen.
One should always remember though that the first casualty of war is the truth.

Looks like everyone knows who, it's 'why' they can't understand yet. Maybe an idiot at the controls of a surface to air?
Cheers, Tiny

The information is out there; you just have to let it in."
The aircraft may have been heading directly towards the Iranian military base where the missile came from and on their radar the plane might have appeared to them as a retaliation attack as this was only a few hours after the two bases in Iraq were destroyed.
A certain degree of panic may have not given them time to verify anything so to protect themselves they shot it down, what they thought might have been a US bomber or something.
That is what can happen when tensions are extremely high in a POTENTIAL war zone.

Some more thoughts on the incident:
Secret intelligence & ‘highly likelys’: How media created narrative around Tehran jet crash to blame Iran, Russia and Trump
Whatever caused Flight 752 to crash just after takeoff from Tehran, the 176 people who died were quickly drafted as elements in a propaganda narrative targeting both Iran, Russia and US President Donald Trump.
Iran admits to shooting it down due to human error. At least a bit of honesty which is rare these days but they obviously had no choice.

Incompetent towel heads with their finger on the trigger blamed for the downing
hinekadon (11-01-20)
Somehow, I don't think so. Iranian President Hassan Rouhani is unlikely to accept that it was the policy of his government that brought this about.
I'm out of my mind, but feel free to leave a message...
A bit like these incompetent cowboys, I guess:
Iran Air Flight 655
Iran Air Flight 655 was a scheduled passenger flight from Tehran to Dubai via Bandar Abbas that was shot down on 3 July 1988 by an SM-2MR surface-to-air missile fired from USS Vincennes, a guided-missile cruiser of the United States Navy. The aircraft, an Airbus A300, was destroyed and all 290 people on board were killed.[1] The jet was hit while flying over Iran's territorial waters in the Persian Gulf, along the flight's usual route, shortly after departing Bandar Abbas International Airport, the flight's stopover location. Vincennes had entered Iranian territory after one of its helicopters drew warning fire from Iranian speedboats operating within Iranian territorial limits.[2][3]. Though Pentagon officials at first denied any knowledge of the incident.
Easy to slag off at ordinary people caught up in extraordinary circumstances, isn't it.
Really isn't all that much difference between ragheads and cowboys, is there?
If you really want to cheer up, just remember that people like this all around the world have their fingers poised over big, red buttons.
Or, perhaps he'll do this:
Post-tour of duty medals
Despite the mistakes made in the downing of the plane, the men of USS Vincennes were awarded Combat Action Ribbons for completion of their tours in a combat zone. The air-warfare coordinator on duty received the Navy Commendation Medal,[10] but The Washington Post reported in 1990 that the awards were for his entire tour from 1984 to 1988 and for his actions relating to the surface engagement with Iranian gunboats.[67] In 1990, Rogers was awarded the Legion of Merit "for exceptionally meritorious conduct in the performance of outstanding service as commanding officer [...] from April 1987 to May 1989." The award was given for his service as the commanding officer of Vincennes from April 1987 to May 1989. The citation made no mention of the downing of Iran Air 655.[68][69]
No, probably not.
so the end score was.
idiot trump
-1 missile
+1 asshole
0 losses
Iran
-13 missiles
-1 asshole
220 losses (170 plane 50 mourners).
and trump is still an idiot.

and i am still waiting for boeing to be sued for missile parts falling off plane causing catastrophic failure and crash.
Now, on top of 176 already dead, some poor plod(s) are going to have their lives ruined because of the actions of megalomaniacs playing world chess.
Iran commander says requests to shut down country's airspace denied ahead of Ukraine plane crash
Iran's president Hassan Rouhani tweeted the country "deeply regrets this disastrous mistake," promising that those behind the incident would be prosecuted.
The real guilty bastards live in Washington and Tehran, but they will likely never see the inside of a court room.
Ever was it thus.
