Geez, Tiny….that’s a really funny article.

I didn’t realise that the Canadian Ministry of Truth had a media outlet like that…….sort of a Canadian equivalent to the Beetoota Advocate.

That’s one sure way to put paid to any irritating or embarrassing argument…..it’s called “ab absurdo” :

Appeal to ridicule (also called appeal to mockery, ab absurdo, or the horse laugh) is an informal fallacy which presents an opponent's argument as absurd, ridiculous, or humorous, and therefore not worthy of serious consideration.

I see also that the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation has backed away from its original story that started the speculation.

That’s almost unheard of….can you imagine a government-funded National Public Broadcaster backpedaling on a story that has the potential to embarrass the Government that funds it?

    Unthinkable!

And to think that said Public Broadcaster is entirely independent of Government….oh, hang on:

According to The Hill Times, a clause in Bill C-60, an omnibus budget implementation bill introduced by the government of Stephen Harper in 2013, "appears to contradict a longstanding arm's-length relationship between the independent CBC and any government in power."[14][15] The clause allows the "prime minister's cabinet to approve salaries, working conditions and collective bargaining positions for the CBC."[14]

These are such interesting times in which we live aren’t they…..hard to know who to believe really.

Thank goodness our democratic Governments wouldn’t lie to us about anything that might end up embarrassing them.

Incidentally....the "Administrative matter" referred to the RCMP in May of 2019 by the Public Health Agency of Canada with respect to these two Chinese scientists has yet to be resolved....must be one hell of an "Adminstrative matter".

The RCMP received a referral from the Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC) on May 24.

"Based on information received to date, the RCMP has assessed that there is no threat to public safety at this time," Robert Cyrenne said in an email to CBC News on Thursday.

PHAC is describing it as a policy breach and "administrative matter" and says the department is taking steps to "resolve it expeditiously," Eric Morrissette, the health agency's chief of media relations, said from Ottawa.

George....history has been made......we finally agree on something

    Flights arriving today in Melbourne:
    CZ643 from Guangzhou
    CZ3073 Shenzhen
    JD461 Qingdao
    CZ321 Guangzhou
    MU737 Shanghai
    MF803 Xiamen
    GS7945 Chongqing
    CA165 Beijing
    CZ343 Guangzhou

In excess of 2000 people on board.....no doubt more of the same tomorrow,

    ABS stats:

    Key statistics

In 2018-19, there were 9.3 million short-term visitor arrivals to Australia from overseas, the highest year on record.
China was the largest source country with over 1.4 million visitors nationally, it was also the largest source for NSW, Vic, SA, Tas. and the ACT

That equates to around 27,500 people per week.

And on top of that, we have this:

Australia Airport Staff Threaten Strike Without Virus Protection

The union representing security workers at Australia’s biggest airports threatened to strike unless members are given equipment to guard against the new coronavirus.

Some airport staff have been barred from wearing protective gear such as face masks to avoid upsetting customers, the United Workers Union said in a statement Friday. The union represents 150,000 workers in Australia from more than 45 industries.

The whole thing is a bloody disgrace.....all driven by the need to hang on to the almighty bloody (Chinese) dollar come what may.

Son rang this morning, they are finally able to find a flight home. Instead of flying to Singapore then to Darwin, they are now flying to Hong Kong, Sydney and then Darwin!

Now for some stats to put this in context

It is estimated that each year influenza causes an average of 13,500 hospitalisations and more than 3,000 deaths among Australians aged over 50 years, which suggests more than double the number of deaths from motor vehicle accidents can be attributed to complications from influenza. The highest rates of hospitalisation are seen in children under 5 and the elderly. from:

    That is Influenza A

    Coronavirus Cases: 11,337
Deaths: 259 - All in China

So Far, there is precious little to worry about, unless, of course, you live in a 3rd World country where medical intervention is not readily available.

Are antibiotics effective in preventing and treating the new coronavirus?
No, antibiotics do not work against viruses, only bacteria.

The new coronavirus (2019-nCoV) is a virus and, therefore, antibiotics should not be used as a means of prevention or treatment.

However, if you are hospitalized for the 2019-nCoV, you may receive antibiotics because bacterial co-infection is possible.

Are there any specific medicines to prevent or treat the new coronavirus?
To date, there is no specific medicine recommended to prevent or treat the new coronavirus (2019-nCoV).

However, those infected with the virus should receive appropriate care to relieve and treat symptoms, and those with severe illness should receive optimized supportive care. Some specific treatments are under investigation, and will be tested through clinical trials. WHO is helping to accelerate research and development efforts with a range or partners.

Glad to hear that the family has things sorted out.

I won't comment on the rest of your post other than to say that the information you have posted is a varied assortment of data.

Data are not statistics.......data are individual pieces of factual information recorded and used for the purpose of analysis. It is the raw information from which statistics are created. Statistics are the results of data analysis - its interpretation and presentation.

If you scroll down your "worldometer" link, you will see some relevant statistics under the heading "Fatality Rate (case fatality ratio or CFR) of the Wuhan Coronavirus".

There is a further link provided under that heading titled " Wuhan Coronavirus Fatality Rate" which expands on the subject.

These are the statistics that are relevant.......not the number of influenza deaths per motor vehicle death, or some other such unrelated data.

The mathematics of epidemiology is not a subject that lends itself to discussion on a forum such as this.

Suffice to say that, at the moment, the estimated Case Fatality Ratio of Coronavirus is significantly higher than the relatively well established Case Fatality Ratio of common Influenza.

A little off the main topic.........but some interesting similarities to the Canadian case:

U.S. Accuses Harvard Scientist of Concealing Chinese Funding

Prosecutors say Charles M. Lieber, the chair of Harvard’s chemistry department, lied about contacts with a Chinese state-run initiative that seeks to draw foreign-educated talent.
Dr. Lieber was one of three scientists to be charged with crimes on Tuesday.

Zaosong Zheng, a Harvard-affiliated cancer researcher was caught leaving the country with 21 vials of cells stolen from a laboratory at Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital in Boston, according to the authorities. They said he had admitted that he had planned to turbocharge his career by publishing the research in China under his own name. He was charged with smuggling goods from the United States and with making false statements, and was being held without bail in Massachusetts after a judge determined that he was a flight risk. His lawyer has not responded to a request for comment.

The third was Yanqing Ye, who had been conducting research at Boston University’s department of physics, chemistry and biomedical engineering until last spring, when she returned to China. Prosecutors said she hid the fact that she was a lieutenant in the People’s Liberation Army, and continued to carry out assignments from Chinese military officers while at B.U.

Ms. Yanqing was charged with visa fraud, making false statements, acting as an agent of a foreign government and conspiracy. She was in China and was not arrested.

Sorry, I used "stats" as a generic, not as statistics in the true sense of the word. The comparison was merely that Influenza deaths in Australia with a relatively small population and better medical facilities, still outstrips the total deaths (all in China, mind you) from Coronavirus. Sorry, I'm not going to get worked up about it, it's a fact that it is currently not understood, and could become a significant problem if the transmission mechanism is not properly understood. Third world countries have more to worry about it that us, I'd suggest.

The fact that there's a highway to hell and a stairway to heaven says a lot about the anticipated traffic flow.

Default And the bad news just keeps on coming!

A 'highly pathogenic strain' of H5N1 bird flu has been reported in China's Hunan province

A “highly pathogenic” strain of the H5N1 avian flu has been reported in China’s Hunan province, China’s Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs said.

According to a report from Reuters 4,500 chickens died on the farm where the outbreak occurred.

The government culled nearly 18,000 chickens as a result of the outbreak.

Whether a strain of avian flu is deemed “highly pathogenic” relates to its ability to kill chickens, according to USGS.

The World Health Organisation says that while human cases of H5N1 can occur, it “does not infect humans easily.”

Swine Flu, Coronavirus, and now Avian Flu.........I think one of those wildlife items for sale at the Wuhan market must have been a dead Albatross.

Of course never wanting to miss an opportunity to have a whinge and make Mileage out of a deadly problem, the professional complainers are at it again.
Fresh for complaining Morrison didn't do enough to help with the fire situation ( like change the world weather) Now they are going on about the quarantine of people on Christmas Island is too draconian and innocent people are going to be locked up.

Seems to me it's either inconvenience a few people or potentially have the death of tens to maybe hundreds.

The trouble with politics is it's such a load of Bullshit. Those in charge have zero interest in whats best for the country and the people, they will just oppose the other party's ideas no matter how much merit and benefit they may have.

Not about whats best, ALL About putting shit on the other guy.

If they spent as much time and effort into doing whats best for the country and its inhabitants as they do in trying to drag the next man (am I even allowed to say 'man' anymore ??) down we, and the country, would all be farrrr better off

The other problem is they are only interested in keeping things looking good for the time they are in.

If they keep the people happy and things look good while they are there all good even if the effect causes all sorts of problems for years later.

That will be then someone elses problem and they will have to deal with the mess and take the fallout when they have dissappeared back into the private sector.
They can then supplement their ministerial pentions and make fortunes speaking at luncheons, chairing boards and writing books.

Get in, make your money and connections for back handers and a future cushy position then get out and let someone clean up the mess and problems you walked away from.

Son and wife, arrived home from China today, no real stress. Only hassle they had, and it was an oversight on their part, they had no real evidence that wife was actually an Australian Resident. Fortunately he had access to some evidence online which satisfied immigration otherwise, she may have be sent back to China.
