I made a comment there about me taking my other half to hospital. I feel an explanation is in order. She has been chronically ill for about 30 years so we are well acquainted with the public hospital system and the shortfalls, thereof. We have two public hospitals which we regularly inhabit. The Queen Elizabeth in suburban Adelaide for all her cardiac needs. Generally requiring two or three days in high care cardiac ward and often as two or three times a month. Again, the QEH for Cancer treatment which is in remission at the moment. The Royal Adelaide Hospital for her neurological needs - she has Hydrocephalus and a VP Shunt (look it up). Currently, however, she is in the RAH Spinal unit because she had a fall early in December and the swelling has finally gone down. It turns out that she had damaged her T7 vertebrate and a piece of it was pressing on the nerves in her spinal column. So, surgery to remove said vertebrate and a metal plate inserted. The prognosis without surgery was paralysis, with surgery, a good chance of paralysis, sot of Damned if you do, damned if you don't! Anyway, I was in there today and she a)was actually able to sit up and be taken to the toilet and b) with help take 2 steps to get back to bed. She can sort of move her left leg, her right one moves ---- just. Early days yet. Hopefully she can regain some movement or I'll no longer be capable of nursing her at home.

That, in a nutshell, is her current situation.
I'm out of my mind, but feel free to leave a message...

I am by no means a faithful person but I will be sparing hopeful thoughts for your Mrs and the best and most speedy recovery possible.
I never fail to be despaired at how some people seem to have all the rotten luck and burdens in their life and others, far less deserving, seem to sail through doing everything wrong without a single problem ever befalling them.

    Best to you both.

Understood but in my own mixed up mind, I think it is important to stop and smell the roses as they say, Even if they stink at times. I like to take the time to give my own appreciation for the things that work out well, on occasion, and also stop and think of others and wish them the best even if only in my head.
I Do think there is something to Karma but I also think it goes Very astray at times.

I can only imagine what you and especially your mrs are going through and I think it's important to send good thoughts ( I certainly have enough bad thoughts with other things) and hope the universe or what ever listens and makes things better.

An American Friend made me laugh the other day. He has been asking about the bushfires and I told him about all the rain and flooding we had.
He is a faithful person but he said " See, that's the problem with Prayer, You get too many people asking for something and when their prayers are answered, you get way too much of what you wanted!"

In this case can't be enough good will so hopefully it works.

She rang me quite excited today, she has been able to get herself to the side of the bed! Far better than she's hoped this early in the piece.

Sorrow to hear that my friend, My Wife ( I call her Cheese) also have her problems with health and she has been in and out hospital a few times and the issues she has I cant even remember because I never heard them before all I know the ones that she has had and that is ONE STROKE. We have been lucky with the public system because many years ago we were in the Private System paying big bucks and had nothing but trouble so we outed it.. Yes we had our Private doctor foir this and that and when we had our Daughter our Private doctor in Private Hospital was was late for the birth of out daughter by 8 ++ hours (Wife was screeming for him) all because he was hung up to help a Drug O and or other that keep him away) Now this was one of many issue we had with the private system. now with the Birth with my Son in the Publc System in a Public hospital, ALL went like Clockwork, the same goes to all of my and my wife visits to hospital.
We have been lucky with the Public system as only two weeks ago as you Know I had to go to hospital so the wife called for a Ambulance, The Ambulance arrived in 12 minutes, Taken to our public hospital and I was in Emergence section for 4 hours and in this time I saw at least 2 Doctors plenty of nurses and had a CT Scan and after 4 hours I was sent upstairs to my ward and they have given me a Single room with my own Shower, toilet and TV. Next morning I had a MRI and in the arvo the Specialist with the Doctor came to see me in my private room with big trolley with a computer on it showing the photo of what the MRI found. Now I have been lucky with the Public System, all other times I had to share with 3 or 5 others in one room and that was just about impossible to get sleep.

What happens if they want to put your wife in a full time nursing home?

Had a very distressed call yesterday because they were stuffing around with her meds and she was not getting what was NEEDED of her usual regime. Ended up calling the Patient Advocate. () Fortunately, I and a friend who has worked in the system were there when the advocate arrived, as we could confirm everything SWMBO said. The advocate appears to have been the catalyst to fix the problems which was good. Happier wife.

I then get a call this morning that she was able to move off the bed by herself and is mobile again. Not as she was, but, she is moving so well that they said she won't need re-hab and that she can come home tomorrow!

Didn't know about patient advocates, Will have to let my father know and see if there is one where he is and get their details.

I think both the public and private health care systems are simply luck of the draw.
Myself, I have outstanding care and service in the public system and I have also been through hell and back with them. Both fantastically good experiences and Horificly bad have occurred in the same hospital although many years apart. That was the experience of many people I know being what was a local hospital so I guess it's the culture and management of the place at the time.

Although my experiences in the private sector has been limited ( as has it been publicly really) they have all been good. Conversely, many people I know have had very bad experiences.
Like the above reference, Most of them have had to do with child birth ironically. A large public hospital near here had a really bad reputation but I knew quite a few people that had Kids there and they had nothing but glowing reports. Visiting a few of them there I certainly didn't see anything wrong with teh place but I remember there was a big enquiry into the place not long after everyone I knew was having kids there.

There is one thing I know for sure, Hospitals and the medical system are things best avoided.
Make that 2 Things I know, the legal system and anything to do with that is also best avoided.... maybe more than the medical system. :0(

Good to hear Your Mrs has made a significant improvement. I am sure you will both be glad when she is back home.

I am convinced the most effective thing in getting over any ailment is Ones attitude and determination.

I Nursed my father in law with Cancer. He was a strong willed and quietly determined man. He did MANY things in his recovery that I got told repeatedly by so many different people Shouldn't and just didn't happen. Part of that was probably because of things like exercises he was supposed to do twice a day. He would have me helping him with them Literally 6-8 times a day. If he had the strength to do them, we did them again. And again and.... Till he couldn't do them any more.... till tomorrow.

They would tell him come back when you can do this with no trouble. They would expect him back in a week or more. 2-3 Days he'd be making an appointment to go to the next step.
At first they thought he was jumping the gun and must be doing something wrong. When they saw he was up to speed and beyond, they were amazed.

Seen other people the same . Defy medical diagnosis and prognosis because they don't want to be sick or are determined to get better.

In my book, recovering from anything recoverable is 90% to do with your mental attitude and personal resolve.

Well, the boss is home and moving better than she has done in years! Although the injury may have been recent, there must have been more going on than anyone thought. Considering she is less than two weeks out of major back surgery it is a miracle that she can move at all! She even took herself to the toilet this morning.
