Default Lawyers, right down there next to politicians and pedo’s!

How in the world is it allowed to happen that a lawyer can charge $40 to make OR RECEIVE a phone call and $80 to sent OR RECEIVE an email???

Who the fcuk monitors these parasites?

A doctor may charge a lot but they save you life. A fcuking parasite gutter dwelling scum sucking lawyer ruins lives!

Dentists go to meetings and collude on prices as well, so much for free enterprise
There is a fine line between "Hobby" and "Madness"

Try asking a solicitor to write a letter for you! $400 is pretty cheap by their standards.

I don't know how I would feel earning a living from other people's misery. In any legal battle, the lawyers on both sides always win, regardless of their competence.

My father grew up in a small country town. He always maintained that lawyers were fine while you only had one in town. As soon as a second one set up shop, all the problems started, because instead of mediating a dispute, each lawyer could take a side and "fight" the matter out.

Lawyers claim that they have to charge so much because they have high overheads.
They have an office like everybody else and an Internet connection.
They don't even need a multimeter.
...and we all have to do research and keep up with the State of the Art.

Dentists and Vets have a fair bit of equipment to pay off and maintain, but lawyers ????

Both my brother and sister-in-law are lawyers.

Depends on the lawyer you get, its best to ask some fees questions before hand, just like if you called a tradesman in, you wouldn't give then a job without knowing what they were going to charge you so why not ask your lawyer first?

Some figures i saw first hand over the last 12 months through friends.

Divorce matter letters. $1000 a pop.

Barristers $8000 a day in the magistrates court.

Queens council dont get out of bed for under $10000 a day.

One thing i do know for sure after seeing what some friends went through, the only winner in a court case is the legal team, even if you win a case the legal team clean up big time.....

Over 20 years ago I had to engage a QC to fight a case for my wife against an injustice perpetrated by a NSW police officer.

    Best money I ever spent.

Probably the same way the power companies in this country can make $3Bn a year PROFIT and then tell you they are working hard to lower power prices.

Never seen a poor Lawyer have you?

Guy I knew from way back and recently caught up with again Was a chef then an accountant then became a lawyer. Said it was the worst most disgusting business he could ever imagine. He became a partner in a large law firm but said it was the worst time of his life and it literally nearly killed him with the guilt and playing on his conscious till he had a break down. Went back to accountancy for a while to get himself back together and is now a Qantas Pilot. Said he is happiest he has ever been.

Some people are smart enough to be able to do what they want.

They're not all bad - but the dodgy ones give them all a bad name.

I used to do IT support for a number of law firms and got to be a "fly on the wall" and see a lot of what really went on. One guy specialised in family law and was a really top bloke. It said a lot about his character that he was divorced and yet, years later was still close friends with his ex wife. We were often called on to fix her computer and he'd pick up the tab. He was always advising his clients to mediate and only go to court as a last resort. He'd often offer me a glass of red when we were working late doing an upgrade on his computer systems and he treated his staff well - something reflected in the length of time some had worked for him.

The other extreme though... treated (and paid) their staff terribly. Seemed to somehow be exempt from unfair dismissal laws. Could not understand why they should pay for more than one license of any software product. I once raised the possibility of Microsoft auditing them and they arrogantly said "they'll never get past the front door". Fortunately the need for individual product keys fixed that (there were some good sides to the MS license activation phoning home).

I remember one (going back some 30 years) whose standard operating procedure seemed to be to help his clients by writing threatening letters written in legalese, but with no actual legal standing. In other words, a client would want something done their way, the law said they couldn't have it, but the firm would write a threatening letter to their client's "victim" and hope the other party would roll over instead of getting legal advice. It seemed to work in many cases. Just because a lawyer writes you a letter saying you "have to" do things their client's way, does not mean this is true.

It's often said the only difference between lawyers and criminals is a piece of paper.

Lawyers are like any other profession or trade. There are good ones and bad ones. It is meaningless to quote an amount for a letter or email without context. Lawyers generally charge by time. If they spent 30 seconds reading an email and charge $80, that is outright gross overcharging. But for a lawyer who charges $400 per hour and charges $80 for reading and considering a more extensive email it may not be unreasonable at all. This time costing system is very open to abuse and overcharging, and of course some lawyers do. It is always open to clients to dispute any lawyers account, and have it considered by a costs assessor. Bills are often reduced on such assessments, sometimes quite substantially.

Running a legal practice does have very significant overheads. Compulsory Professional Indemnity Insurance is very expensive, often running to tens of thousands of dollars even for a sole practice. Lawyers also contribute to an indemnity fund to compensate victims of fraud perpetrated by colleagues. Other significant expenses are software and access to various online services. Law is not the only profession to have its own specialised (and expensive) requirements over and above many other businesses and professions. But it is not accurate to pretend these do not exist.

There are many very good lawyers who provide a good service and do not overcharge. Sadly there are some who give the rest of the profession a bad name. Also, lawyers do tend to suffer from the fact that they are working within a very flawed and expensive justice system, where those with deep pockets too often prevail regardless of the merits. It is always better to avoid litigation if feasible in the circumstances, and most good lawyers will usually encourage you to do so. Sometimes consulting a lawyer early can resolve a potentially expensive matter with a letter or two. Sadly, the reputation of the profession is such that consulting a lawyer is often a last resort.

Mr 672A, this quote above is very correct.

I just had a close friend get "bad legal" advice that was acted upon, it cost him $80K to the other party plus costs.

Simply got it back plus losses and costs by making a claim through the first lawyers insurance.

I have had this numerous times in my business. Clients get an idea in their head, always from someone else, and then want to carry on like because it's what they want, they think it's law and are entitled to it. Consumer law is pretty easy to understand and as a business operator you know when you screwed up and owe someone and when you did nothing wrong and the the clients is being a whining self centred bitch without a leg to stand on.

Whenever I got a solicitors demand letter, I would write back and ask questions that would take as much time and difficulty to respond to or provide what I asked for as possible. When I got an answer I'd write bask asking something else and then if that was replied to I'd ask the same things I asked or proposed in the first place. I never told them they were full of wind and bullshit and that be the end of the matter, I'd put the mongrel client to as much expense as I could.

Learned this from a good mate of mine. His first wife screwed around on him and then of course tried to blame him for everything and claim every dollar and asset they had even though he owned the house before they were married and she contributed very little . She was paying a solicitor to write the letters and do the dealing and he handled it all himself.
Basicly just kept stringing her along till she ran out of money and was desperate by that time just to get something to pay the lawyers.

Self same thing they do to people they go after and to avoid clients having to pay what others are due.

There is only one thing I know for certain about the whole legal nightmare, it's best avoided no matter what you have to do to steer clear of it.

That said, I'm about to go down that very road but I have no choice. I have had to wait for something else but now the time has come. Have to do it for someone else because If I don't do all I can, I'll never be able to live with myself knowing I didn't try everything I could to honour and fight for them.
The cost won't even rate financially, not that it will be cheap, but the mental and physical strain is going to be devastating.

my neice is a lawyer , and for some unknown deluded reason she took up a job with some bullshit govt funded refugee advocacy in Sydney. So her job was to try and get as many illegal arrivals over the border as possible , against govt policy , all while the govt was paying for it and once the scum got in it would cost the govt more money. The govt is so smart sometimes , supporting something that costs itself even more money. So now nobody talks to my neice , and she wonders why ??? hope you're happy with the situation you created!

i do know of a bloke who lost his house through court trying to blatantly deny the fact that he bashed someone in a vicious assault , i'm sure if he had pleaded gulity he would only copped a slap on the wrist anyway.

and there was a story last night on 60minutes about a family who lost thier house over some stupid comments made on Facebook about thier ex school principal. now their lawyer owns their house ? i didnt even think you can be sued over some text on some screen on a site which is based in the USA ? was that worth it ??? just make an apology and get your revenge some other way if you were that desparate!!
