sharing bandwith between what?
I'm looking into getting a seperate line put in so I'm not sharing bandwith.
I've decided on who I want for the ISP but am confused as to who or how much it is to get a new line installed?
Is there another way to go about it so we are not sharing speeds?
My current house phone provider is AAPT.
Any help would be much appreciated.
Cheers.

sharing bandwith between what?
When you say, sharing bandwidth, do you mean multiple users on the one broadband phone connection in the same premises? (eg: ADSL)
If you have insufficient bandwidth, the simplest solution is to increase the speed above your current plan. Check with your current ISP what plans are available, or you can change provider if you find a better deal.
Yes, you can install a separate phone line, which according to Telstra would be considered a new service and will cost $299.00, plus ongoing monthly line rental.
You can then select whichever ISP you wish.... that cost is in addition to your line installation and monthly line rental fee of course.
The other option is wireless broadband, which is usually more expensive than ADSL.
At the moment we are just using a four port router and changing the ethernet plug when either of us wants to go online.
I'm after my own connection, but to my knowledge if I was to get one on the same line, if we were both online at the same time we would be sharing bandwith?
Also, ADSL2+ is only available by two friggin company's where my exchange is, Telstra and some other insanely high priced ISP as they know they are the only 2 available to service my area. .
* by bandwith I mean Internet speeds
If 4 ports aren't enough, add another router, or upgrade to a router with more ports... that will solve having to change cables.
As I mentioned, for greater bandwidth... upgrade your broadband plan.
You cannot have more than one broadband service on the same line, regardless of how many users are 'on-line' at the same time, as ADSL is 'always on'.
Your options are per my previous post.
Sounds like he has TWO modems.
And yes they will not work on the same line at once.
To get a second line it might turn out a bit pricey.
It might be a good idea to talk to the other modem's owner
and look at combining to get a bigger plan that both of you can use at the same time.
It's more like he has very low internet speed and thus having two PC sharing the bandwidth causing both of them to crawl.
More details of your connection would clarify the question. You see what happens when you say just a little bit? As many people answer the further away you will be from the resolution.
What is also confusing is he said he uses a 4-port modem, but has to unplug a cable to use it... suggesting there are already 4 computers connected and he wants to add a 5th?
Yes, clarification from the OP is needed.
My bad,
Our connection is only 512k.
I just didn't really want 1.5mb as thats one of my only options, a 8mb plan is too pricey and as i was saying adsl2+ is only available through two companys.
Its only a 1 port router, thats why we have to change whenever someone wants to go on the net.
Thanks for the responses, i know my options now.
Cheers.
