Around 1994 when I had my first mobile brick I was thinking about designing a remote speaker microphone system for it so I didn't have to always get it out of my bag or very deep trouser pocket when somebody called.

Absolutely! A physical switch to enable the mike, and another on the battery. And quick boot up to a phone only mode.
Wont be popular with BB or the data miners however.
