Default New folder creation extremely slow W10 but heard happens in other W versions.

I am so over this issue. This will be the 3rd time this year I am about to do a windows reset because I cant find a solution online that works with this reoccurring problem.
I move my mouse over a blank area, Right click, move down to new and then it hangs before it gives the next option of either new folder or new word doc etc. This hang can be from 5 secs to 20 secs. Its only while hovering over the new > that i get this hang/freeze.
Everything else in the first right click pop up can be accessed extremely quick as long as i don't move the mouse over the new > first. The second I hover over the new > then every thing else freezes while it hangs. If i attempt to left click anywhere else on this or other monitors i get the ole windows blue turning circle , then a white screen then my task bar and everything re sets. There are so many online fix's and cures and none of them seem to work. Everything from make sure no external hard drives are connected to USB to extremely long registry tweeks. Does anyone know of a fiz without just directing me to more online "Cures".

I'll get some sh*t from other members if I suggest the alternative.

the only time i have had anything similar i found that it was
because windows was a bit stuffed due to a faulty hard drive

when i tested the drive it had a fair number of bad sectors and once i replaced
my main drive with a SSD i have never had anything like it again.

To be honest it was the best thing i have done was install ssd's i never ever have issues with my WINDOWS
computers they run very quick 20 second boot up and run everything i need .

have you run a sector test on your drive ????

and yes lsemmens you would have and more than likely i would have been one of them

Also check that the HDD is not full.

I have not had the OP problem with either of my W10 OS.

Agree with fandtm666 that it is possibly a HDD getting ready to fail & writing bad sectors.
Also possibly just some corrupt system files, however this is usually caused by the above.
Both can be caused by power failures not allowing W10 to shut down properly or moving a running laptop & jarring the HDD, the latter doesn't happen with SSD's, the former is usually repaired in the background by W10's self healing regime.

open command prompt as admin & run chkdsk
Either chkdsk /f or chkdsk /r
you will get a message that it can't proceed while the drive is running & ask you if you want to proceed on next restart. Say yes & restart.
if the HDD is passed as good by chkdsk, then run sfc /scannow to identify & fix any corrupt or missing system files.
You may also after that choose to run DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /CheckHealth
    or DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /ScanHealth
if necessary then run DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

If you are unsure how or why you should run these commands,
    Check out

If all the above fails, then backup the drive if you can & replace drive, install image or go fresh install.
Agree that SSD is a real joy to have & the prices are quite good now.

    hope that helps.

    Hi,

I just had my backup drive die in its arse, need to replace and am looking at SSD for backup.

I actually would like to replace all my external drives with SSD but I need to talk to someone who has gone down this path and actually knows the pitfalls etc.

My questions, I only have standard usb connectors can I get an ssd drive that can just plug in and I can run my backup software (casper) without any modifications ?

If so what brand of SSD should I get ?

And, I probably should have asked this first, will the fact I am using USB cables to connect will this slow the transfer speed to the SSD.

AND do I need to update my main drive to a SSD to make this whole mess work?

Sorry if I speak in gibberish, been having a bad time recently and the last thing I needed was another expense and problem.

    TIA Ma.

I have a couple of SSDs in two of my machines and they are great. Not sure about USB though, haven't tried that yet. Most of my stuff is still on spinning platters. Currently I'm only using them as OS drives.

connecting the ssd via usb will work but you will not get the speed
that comes with ssd because of the usb limitations.
