Only the member sees the banner, nobody else sees any details if you hide age & DOB.

If you want others to see it, and receive a public birthday greeting... which by you posting it was also your birthday, it appears you wanted it known, you need to change your preferences for future birthdays.

You can select to only display day and month.... that doesn't show your age or date of birth.

if you are concerned about "everyone will know I'm an old bastard" it's a bit pointless now, as you've pointed it out.

No, I was just wondering why that's all. Doesn't particularly concern me, I actually thought it was auto prompted. But it makes sense that if you have it hidden, then logic would dictate that you probably don't want it announced on the day either.

Haha, they probably didn't need me to point it out, Probably obvious from my posts sometimes. You tend to lose your tolerance for a lot of things the older you get.

No Bob, it's not done automatically. It used to be, but that was discontinued for some reason that I can remember.....mtv does it manually when he can, and I have no idea how....
