Default Powered USB Hubs - Power to all ports for simultaneous use; not just for Flash Drives

Powered USB Hubs – are there any that provide sufficient power to all ports?

I've found most only provide enough power to support USB Flash Drives.
Some may have a charging port, but usually at cost of losing power to 1 or more other ports.
Trying to connect other USB devices (external 2.5" HDD...), and they start dropping in/out of power.
The larger 7-10 Port ones look to all hype, as provided power adapters are not powerful enough.

In a nut shell, I'm after a Powered 5-10 port USB Hub.
Must have sufficient power for simultaneous use on all ports.
Must have enough power for connecting more than just USB Flash Drives.

    What does everyone recommend?

What is the maximum current you require?

This one will do up to 4 amps.

I had this problem a while back with a Photobooth I built. Pulling keyboards, Mice, ( 2of) Supply power to an external devise and a printer made the thing keep crashing.
To get full power from a Hub, it MUST be externally powered. I changed to one of those and had no more problems.

There are some bare boards I got off fleabay that are use a 12V supply and will supply 2A off all 4 ports. These are great for charging batteries and Devises which is what I use them for.

A 10 port hub supplying the standard 1a to each port is 50W That is a fair output and you would need a 12V @ 4a supply. Double that for a USB2 standard of 2A ea and If you can get something that powerful, it's going to cost for sure.

"Transfer files and charge devices at up to 1.5A from each port." ...from the above jaycar link.

Same link.... "It has a combined maximum power of 4A, but realistically not everything will be charging at the same time."

Thus... the top line is bollocks -- it's got 10 ports for a theoretical simultaneous current (all ports used) of 15amps....never going to happen.

Second line....so only 2 devices charging at 1.5amp plugged into the hub at the same time....with 1 amp left over...and USB2.0 standards say minimum of 500mA per port..so 2 'free' ports.

As mtv has intimated -- what is the maximum concurrent amperage you require?

This is my third hub that has stopped working (1 x 4-Port; 2 x 7-Port).
The current draw appears to be more that the hub adapter can provide.

Current 4-Port Powered Hub (now fried)
    3 x SDR dongles
    1 x Bluetooth dongle

    Previous 7-port Powered Hubs (fried)
    3 x SDR dongles
    1 x Bluetooth dongle
    1-2 x Scanners (Uniden)
    1-2 Flash Drives (occasionally)
    1-2 External 2.5" HDD (occasionally)

The SDR's are receive only used with DSD, SDRsharp, Unitrunker... (powered 24/7).
Bluetooth dongle is for the wireless keyboard and mouse.

I'd like to know what Powered USB Hubs others are using, specially those using SDR's.
It is extremely frustrating having these not perform, which is different to what their advertising tells us.

    3 x SDR's - I really have no idea on power requirement.
If they were actual TV dongles, so doing the receiving and decoding, they would require more power.
But these are only receiving an RF signal with computer doing the decoding, so "should" be less than a TV dongle.

1 x Bluetooth dongle (little tiny USB plug) - Hub should easily support one in each port.

1-2 Scanners (Uniden 325 and 436) - Have their own batteries and should not require much power.

1-2 x USB Flash Drives - a hub should easily support a flash drive in each port.

1-2 x External 2.5" HDD - 1TB size used occasionally for backup (most of the time I use the computer USB).

The dongles & flash drives typically use around 250-280mA each, so a 4A supply should be adequate.

I'm tipping the failures are likely due to overheating/poor heat dissipation.

For your demanding purpose, something like this is likely more suitable.

And no, I haven't used one myself, so just a suggestion.

From what I've read, 170-300mA for an SDR dongle...so not really a problem.

External 2.5" drives (mechanical not SSD) can be up to 1amp, hence why they often have pair USB plugs (500mA each port)

I doubt this is a issue with amount of current being drawn, at least not going by your detailed usage -- however .... "(powered 24/7)"

How long are you getting out of the (cheap, chinesium) hubs MSY are selling you? These things aren't really designed for 24/7/365 constant duty...the caps are likely dying due to extended usage scenario.

Define 'fried' if you can -- dead unit, or dead plugpak?

I know now that I should have tested the AC/DC Adapters on the first 2 with a multimeter.
I just returned them and received a refund for one, and replacement for the other.

When back home I'll test this 3rd one before returning it for refund/replacement and post my results.

Thanks MTV, I may have to steer towards more commercial/industrial type Hubs, but they are very pricey.
