    Default Idiot Alert!!!

Who? Me!!!! I went for a ride to check out the Herberton Historical Museum, well worth a look, by the way, After about an hour of taking piccies, the battery on my camera goes flat!!! My own stupid fault! I think I last charged it a couple of weeks back and have taken thousands of piccies since, so, no one to blame but myself. At least I had enough charge in my phone and the memory to take some more piccies. I spent about 3 hours there and my brain was so overloaded I could not take any more. If you are ever on the Atherton Tablelands, make this one of your "must see" stops! I'll post some piccies and description in my travel blog when I do the next one.
I'm out of my mind, but feel free to leave a message...

Batteries are so cheap now it is foolish not to have spares. Same with Memory cards. I don't even bother re using cards any more. Make a new directory on them and shoot till they are full or near it.
Download them then put them away the same as one would the "Negatives" in the film days. I have cards that are 15 Yo and the images are still fine on them.

I was visiting Herberton in the mid 1980s and can't remember a museum, maybe it was built later.
What I do remember was walking through a forest (I call it a forest because the whole Atherton tablelands reminds me of Europe) and there were little cubes of tin lying around everywhere. This was very strange because normally you don't find metallic tin out in the wild, maybe some crystal with another compound but some were near perfect cubes. So went out again and brought back buckets of this stuff that I mostly gave to the people who I was visiting, they weren't locals.

Of course this dwarfs with the red 'rivers' of corundum I found somewhere around Mt. Isa later on.

The only batteries I needed back then were for my Walkman. My camera did have a battery for the exposure meter but that lasted for years. Of course one would run out of film in the worst moments but that was more a matter of cost rather than forgetting to buy enough.

I forgot to mention that my bike went to "sleep" on me too. I stopped on slight rise to do up my jacket (I was getting cold) and didn't put the side stand down, so the bike decided that it was time to fall over. I managed to pick it up by myself this time.

My Canon Batteries are currently about $13 ea for a knockoff. I bought 8 of them about 12 months back and pretty sure they were about $8 ea then. I have always bought knockoffs for at least the last 10 years and I can remember 2 that failed. one is on my desk now. Battery was fine, just the cover came apart. Couple of drops of superglue and it was fine.
The hysteria about them ruining cameras comes from the same place as non OEM printer ink ruining them as well. Total BS.

Cards I just looked at the heap I have still in the packets and a sandisk SD is $11 for a 32 and $9 for a 16Gb and they were from JB which isn't the cheapest place although they are for me thanks to daughters discount. That's the ticketed price anyone can get them for though.

I Looked at the XQD cards. I think you underestimated the price of them. Hooley dooley! That's insane! I read so much Hype about Sony Cameras but not having any interest I didn't realise they took proprietary cards and as you say, the batteries are stupid priced as well. I wonder how many people don't realise the cost of these things when they buy the camera's?
They have the same pricing structure as Kubota and John Deere Tractors and Land Rover cars. 16 Gb XDQ's are nearly $200 on Fleabag and 128's are like $500. That's nuts!
I just bought some 200's which I got a huge discount on but I think they were like $70 Retail. They hold about 8000 Full Res pics on my Camera's.

I have for a long time tried to stick to things that were easy to get. I was doing a shoot once that the client decided they wanted a lot of Video and was running out of cards. Went to the local woolworths supermarket and bought extras there at a reasonable price. Saw batteries for sale in a convenience store on the Gold coast once as well and also seen them at orifice works. If you get stuck, being able to buy the things at all is far more important than price.

I have spare cards in all the cars now just in case. Even have an old but still perfectly functioning SLR under the seat of my cars.

You certainly educated me that not all cards and batteries are as cheap as I thought!
