Default LG 55LB6520-TB - Is it Going to be Worth it???

Hi all and hope everyone is doing fine for this xmas period....

I've been offered a faulty LG 55LB6520-TB, for free. It's a LED screen.
Weird thing is that it has a UK plug with it - after a bit of Google-Fu, it looks like an Egypt model - So PAL is there ??

Now, I haven't seen the fault and what has been described to me is that the LG logo comes on, then goes off, then repeats.
I have no idea if the back light comes on during this period. But the person has said I can have it if I want it.
There's also no Remote. No 3D glasses (of which I'm not bothered about).

My main usage (when I get around to it), is using it as a security monitor (4 camera feeds). So a remote may not be needed.

There are some 'long' caps around the PS, from some reading. But it could the Strips or the Power Board, or the whole board$$.

I'm alone this xmas and was pondering with having something to play with

What do you guys and Gals think..?

    Cheers,
    GT250

If the Logo appears the backlighting is working.
Constant rebooting looks like the main power rail is sagging under load.
Power supply caps is the go.
Take it as you have nothing to lose.

How long does the LG logo stay on, before it goes off ?
Is it just a flash ?

    G'day all.

Hi all, thanks for the replies...

I have informed the person involved that I will take it as it is. Now I just have to wait for the other half to say ok - who hates my guts, LOL!

I haven't seen the screen logo flash at all. So have no idea as to the pattern/cycle So only going off what he says.
Actually, I might be able to power it up myself on Sunday when she's out, hummm....!

Obviously the best quick fix are the caps. But doing a bit of research, these LED strips can go and the whole back board (control board?), has to be replaced - making it all non cost effective.

It's only 6-7 yrs old so I wouldn't assume it's the caps for its age - and I would have thought that 'BAD CAPS' were a thing of the past with todays technology...?

Modern day switchmode power supplies hammer the filter caps. They have not kept up.

Do not waste your time with the video.
Just get the back off and replace the bulging caps.

    Hi all,
Managed to plug it in and see what was going on...

NB: On power on, there is no noise whatsoever, nothing...!
Don't know how to link a video, so I put the video onto the PC and froze the pic and took a screen shot.

First pic is the LG Logo after about 3 seconds from power on. Stays on the screen for about 0.1 of a sec, then disappears.

Second pic is after approx 15 seconds - No Signal - Check Connection - Blue Ball - and PCM in the top left. Again 0.1sec display.

Third pic is after approx 15 seconds No Signal - check connection - Orange Ball. Again 0.1 sec display.

Forth pic is No Signal - check connection - Blueish Ball - different position. Again 0.1 display.

So the 'No Signal' seems to just - as it is, pop about the screen - probably just floats around when the TV is working ok.

Hi Loopy, hope all is well
Reschs, I'd love to just grab it and find out. But politics is at play here! My problem is - is that if I 'push' it, I'm going to burn some bridges...
That's why I have to be justified to get it.
I can't push for my own way all the time. I'm only prepared to take the sarcastic remarks and the post shit if it's worth it. So getting it home and finding out it's not the caps is going be a real bummer...

Hopefully, I'll find out on Monday or Tuesday if she will let 'it go to me'.

    Cheers,
    GT250

Totally different fault to previously described. May still be caps.
Can you access the Menu to do a re tune?

    PCM is the sound format.
The no signal moves around as does a screen saver.
Looks like it actually works. Have you tried it with an antenna ? If so, no signal could be cos it's lost its channels and I'd say you'll need a remote to fix that.
Also, maybe antenna is not currently selected as the input.

Did you download the manual for it ? See about the joystick button under the screen, especially page 18 shows how to use it to change the input source.

That'll be a ripper TV if you can get it set up.

    Hi all,
I have no access to an antenna where it is.
I won't have access to the TV until at least next Sunday.
    It's in a place i shouldn't be.

    Wotnot: Yeah, great reflection
Reschs: Fault was described to me, this was my first look at it.
Loopy: There is no remote. No Antenna access at all (unless I get it home). But if it works I can use for me my intended security cameras as a monitor only.

I might be able to get a second hand LG remote off another TV, maybe that'll allow me some control.

Problem is, any screen display (0.1secs), is after BLANK for about 13-15secs: so cycle is BLANK 13-15secs - pop up info 0.1sec - BLANK 13secs - pop up info 0.1secs and so on. I couldn't use a menu if I wanted to as it wouldn't be be on screen long enough.

Oh well. I might find out today if I'm allowed it.

    Hi all,
    Update:
Still no word if I can get it. Just stupid politics.
Not going to be worth the hassle, especially if I have to go above someone...

I'll have a last go on Monday, or Tues to get a final answer.

    Ok.
In work today, I noticed that a 'note' has been placed on the TV. Which means it's ok for me to get it.

I had sent a 'nice' email to her on Friday - pushing the issue - and today I saw the note.
No idea on price though. Where I work - all goods (working), have to paid for. I have no idea what I will be charged for a 'not fully working' TV.

I'll find out I guess on Monday or Tuesday.

Jeeze. Stressful all this... Just hate seeing something that could be reused/repaired instead of being dumped...

Bit confused what all the politics talk is about but you can just say it is broken because of the no signal 'error' (as politics ppl have no clue anyhow so you can just claim the receiver is broken) and take it home for free and even if the receiver really was broken who uses that part anyhow.
Everything goes through an HDMI port these days.

If it's ok to take it and no mention of price I'd say it's yours for nothing.
Since it's broken they should be happy you'll take off their hands.

Great Tv, especially if you end up getting it for free.. As suggested check the caps. I would also check or update the firmware.. Seems like it's corrupt.
Manufactures website might have some info on firmware updates via usb.

    Good Luck!
