    This will vary, depending on make/model/year of vehicle ~ there is no definitive/single way of doing it.

    On a Subaru Legacy (FB engine) for example, it looks like this;

    I would think in most cases it's just a momentary button that sends a signal to an ECU, and the ECU does the rest.

    Most of the time, this is right ~ but never underestimate their ability to turn a momentary switch into something else (LEDs, NFC receiver, redundant contacts, etc) to end up with a momentary switch with 4 ~ 8 pins (harness connector). Some of them don't actually connect to the ECU either -- they can go to BCM, dash module, or PCM and it's these modules that actually signal the ECU. It wouldn't at all surprise me to see these buttons grown a fingerprint reader one day =)

    As said, it differs between vehicles ...all I've been doing is googling 'engine push button start switch <brand/model> ' and seeing what comes out the other end ; if you omit <brand/model> you'll end up with 3rdparty aftermarket clues/diagrams...but most specific data is contained in the vehicle workshop manual and wiring diagrams etc etc.

    What's your intent here?
