    Post Samsung HW-Q950T Soundbar

After reading how good these were, I decided to replace my LG sk9y 5.1.4 soundbar with this 9.1.4 monster.....

With a background in pro audio, I always considered soundbars to be toys, not a real alternative to a proper component system.
My current living arrangement consists of a long rectangular room with tv at one end and a half dividing wall to a dining area.
Setting up a component system with associated wiring is not practical here, let alone roof speakers.

Hence the decision to go with a soundbar...

I was quite impressed with the lg, but no earc support meant a lossy atmos and no support for dts-x etc.
The sub bass performance of the lg was pretty ordinary as well.
Typical of most surround systems, stereo performance was very ordinary.

Connected to my lg 4k oled tv via a new earc cable (doesn't come with one) the q950t delivers the full atmos experience, along with the common hd formats.
Bass response is excellent, room shaking. This is a very powerful system.
stereo performance is excellent, they got it right with this soundbar.

Overall i would rate this as good as a mid range component system in most situations.
The average consumer can just plug it in, set up the rear speakers and sub and go for it.
Most component systems can be a little intimidating for the average joe....
yes, mr 672a, i know your system is killer, but not everyone wants or can install a system like yours......
If it came with a mic and auto calibration it would be even better.

Note: when i purchased the unit, hdmi inputs would not work, only optical input/bluetooth/wifi. So no proper atmos.
I received a replacement unit, same problem. Friday afternoon hdmi cec started working, so i unplugged the optical input and i had earc operational.
Samsung had pushed a firmware update to it........

Highly recommended, or wait for the new 11.1.4 Q950A with side/direct/upwards firing rear speakers.

Note: with a samsung tv both soundbars utilise the tv speakers in conjunction with the soundbar.

RRP: 1900, but can be found on special for 1499 or even less when the Q950A is released.....

Just done some testing with the shield, won't decode atmos properly.
Works fine passing through shield and LG TV to soundbar.
LG decodes it fine using inbuilt app.
