Gday mate i just bought a Nuvi 310 and am wondering the same things i have some info forthcoming when i get it ill pass it on to you.
The Missus and children bought me a Garmin Nuv 250 for Christmas.
I was wondering if there are any Cons to this GPS Navigator.
Maps came with it Whereis/sensis and am also wondering if these can be backed up to an external source.
Any feedback out there on this item - Many Thanks in advance

Hi checkitout,
I just bought a Nuvi 760 and I'm currently in discussions with Garmin support about getting a copy of the mapsource CD. I tried emailing GME (local distributor) but they won't answer any emails. I emailed Garmin support and they said I can buy the CD for $15 US. When I asked whether it was Australian maps they forwarded my email onto Garmin Asia who promptly told me to contact GME!!!
I told them GME won't amswer emails and asked what my options were. No reply so far.
I changed to Garmin because Navman won't support the iCN 510 with upgraded maps. Looks like Garmin support is not much better.
Bob

IF IT DONT WORK USE A BIGGER HAMMER
Thanks puca trying it now. Just a couple of questions.
What's the difference between the NT and non-NT version?
Garmin sent me an unlock code when I registered the unit, will I be able to use it on this version of mapsource?
Bob
nt stands for new technology and refers to the way the maps are compressed, the maps are the same but the nt map once installed takes up less space on your nuvi
Received a response from GME. They don't provide a CD copy of the Mapsource maps. I would have to buy a full retail version of the maps if I want a PC version that's down loadable to the Garmin. Garmin International provide this disk at a nominal charge ($15). GME won't do this and when I emailed Garmin International, they just ignored my emails. So it looks like Garmin support is like Navman support - non existent.
I have gone down the path suggested by puca - works for me. Thanks mate.
Thanks Puca - I have sent you a PM.
It is a pity about the poor support.
I hope that forums like this and other internet downloads might help in the long term.
I am not having any luck here. The URL does not seem to work.
What is the program or map data I would be looking for?
Still feeling a bit lost. Any help will be appreciated. Thanks
It's actually a problem with their domain name and its DNS.

I am looking at ressurecting this project as I ended up never doing the map upgrades (thinking also that I did not want to accidently brick the unit)
Obviously some time has passed on and I would like to do homework before I start fiddling trying to do the map upgrade.
What are my best options nowadays?
easy
look though the posts for the latest 2011 map release
download the "Unlocked" map
connect your GPS to the computer and go into the "Garmin" folder on the internal drive on the GPS and move the map file to a backup folder on your computer (it will be named either GMAPPROM.EXE or GMAPSUPP.EXE. most likely the first) and just copy your downloaded(and unzipped/UnRARed) and unlocked map to that folder on the GPS
unplug the GPS and it should load the map and you're away
