All I can think of is a 'digital audio converter' ..ie;
Coming out of an Android set top some streaming videos can only get background sound, lips are moving but no vocal or just some muffled speech.
The STB is set to raw output otherwise I would get no audio at all.
This happens when the streaming Audio format is Dolby, Via HDMI, the (cheap) TV processes the left and right channels but not the center once. The TV has optical SPDIF and so I assume it is there to pass the raw audio to a soundbar.
Not keen on spending big on a 5.1 sound bar. would a cheap 2.0 sound bar recover the vocal voice ?
Any input appreciated.

The TV should have an option to down mix 5.1 to 2.1

Soniq purchased 2 years ago doesn't have downmix function. It has Optical output. Was looking at from Big-W
Same outcome as the current TV. According to seller, It doesn't have Dolby capabilities, It process the far right and left channels but not the center once.

Same here. same thing ....it does have a down-mixer ; set sound output to tv (speakers). that's it, stereo via line out jacks =).Soniq purchased 2 years ago doesn't have downmix function.
If you set the (digital) sound output to PCM, I *think* those decoders work (downmix to stereo)
edit: there are 'dolby digital audio converters' out there too btw
