Trade Unions are a joke in this country. Union membership is so low that its laughable they even have input in to the wage system.
We have building unions with too much power who make building anything 10 times more expensive than it should be, while the rest of the unions do absolutely bugger all and make zero effort to sign up new members.
It's hard to believe that the vast majority of aged care sector workers are not union members, given how many there are. But the unions don't bother to visit.

That about sums it up for my wife. I worked out how much she was doing a year unpaid and it stinks.
Her last boss at least valued her work and would go "outside the lines" when asked to on the rare occasion she actually asked for something without say enough notice. But the current one gives nothing and takes plenty, so I have told my wife to walk out the door at finishing time and that's it.
@bazzy It could be worse. When I was in the RAAF, you worked when told to work, regardless of public holidays, or other life situations. Sure you were allocated Leave In Lieu, on an hour for hour basis, but you usually got told when to take that too. Often it was when there was no flying due to atrocious weather, or at a time when it was totally useless to you. Then if the squadrons L.I.L. bill was too high, the CO would just cut everyone's time by a certain percentage. I remember one year where I had about 80 odd hours racked up that I was unable to take, and everyone's L.I.L. was cut by 50%. But you still didn't get a chance to take it because the reason that so many hours got racked up was because we were short staffed, and they wouldn't let you go.
35 years working shift work and plenty of overtime. My experience was always that time in lieu was a crock. You never got it in full if you ever got it at all. It's a vehicle for lazy middle managers who won't battle on your behalf. To be fair, sometimes they were hamstrung themselves.
I never counted genuine emergency o/t as overtime. Sometimes you were paid and sometimes not. Went with the job.
The fact that there's a highway to hell and a stairway to heaven says a lot about the anticipated traffic flow.
Of all the jobs I had, there was only one that I felt "used" and, then, I resigned after 12 months. I must have been blessed as I never felt (apart from that one job) as though I was hard done by.
I'm out of my mind, but feel free to leave a message...
is it ok in the it industry when you do get a toil day to be asked to do some work on the day after it was already approved as toil.
Yes I am an agent of Satan, but my duties are largely ceremonial.
