Default Can you fix my Surround>Melb?

    I have a Sony STRDH700 Surround Receiver 7.1
its developed a distorted sound out of the front left.
Sometimes sound comes out, most of the time not.
when people talk on tv it can sound louder and more distorted and quiet annoying.

A few times PROTECT comes up on the screen and shuts off.
I pull the plug, wait and then plug in.

    Explanation given for this is..
    --
Irregular current is output to the speaker, or the upper panel of the receiver is covered with something. The receiver will automatically turn off after a few seconds.
Check the speaker connection and turn on the power again.
    --
Nothing covers the top of unit, I plugged in the opposite speaker and tried changing the speaker wires, seems to me to be the unit.

Im in Mill Park are there any electronic wizzes around that could take a look and possible fix the issue.?

    Grant...

Although I could repair the unit, I live in Qld and shipping would not make for a cost effective repair.

That said, I did find this on youtube related to the same fault scenario, which might be of use for some technician close to you help identify if they want the job =)

edit: model number a tiny bit different, but my guess is units are basically the same

Wow, what an easy fix, test continuity, find dead tranny.

Maybe I'll have a crack and take a look...

I got a kogan Monitor from work that kept turning off.
What a piece of junk once I opened it, took 2 seconds to see some fat caps, replaced them and was a good easy fix.

Just be mindful of the fact the output drivers are complimentary pairs, so if you find a shorted transistor, also replace it's mate.

Even though it appears like a common mode failure of the unit, do your due diligence and check coil resistance of the speaker that left-front output was connected to, and other components around any failed output driver.

    Happy hunting =)
