I was just watching the news and there was an item about Aboriginal deaths in custody and how "bad" it is. I did some basic Googling to see what the facts were
Says it all, really.

Politically motivated guilt trip rubbish for the most part IMO. The guilt industry loves it.
The fact that there's a highway to hell and a stairway to heaven says a lot about the anticipated traffic flow.

Until they eliminate the deaths by natural causes and people who die before they are actually in custody, the figures will always be useless.
If someone crashes their car, and dies, while being chased is counted as a death in custody.
If someone jumps in the river to escape and drowns, it is still counted.
If someone has a heart attack while running away.
You get the idea.

I prefer to think of the money that Centrelink saves each time it happens. And , anyhow the smartest way to avoid it is not commit any crimes in the first place.....Some pollies use these fudged figures as an excuse not to jail them or to help them out of jail early . Then the cycle repeats itself as soon as the dumb shits get released

How dare you suggest such common sense!!
It’s must take a warped mind to find the convicted criminal, sentence by a judge for their crimes, jailed due to being a threat to society, as completely blameless. Yet the poor police officer, locking up crooks as the public expects, is somehow to blame.
Maybe these people with their warped views should look closer to home - family, associates, environment. Most of the time the people with these warped views have influence over those facets of the criminal, and don’t want to see themselves as the issue, so they blame the police and/or government.

Gaol, these days, is viewed as more of a holiday camp than punishment. The poor cops are the meat in the sandwich here. they arrest a miscreant and the courts let them go. Legislation is really to blame here. laws are made and the judges have to work within the law. Of course, there will always be innocents (I mean the truly innocent) that get caught up in this. Our gaols are full to the brim, so, in reality, our pollies need to allocate more money to incarceration. I'd go so far as to suggest that anyone who is convicted of certain crimes should abrogate all rights to the public purse. That, of course, could then have the flow on effect of increased crime by those who have recently been released, having served their time.

In that case should capital punishment be utilised. I mean if it a spiral of expense to the taxpayer, it costs tax payers around 70K per year per person in prison and if we take away prisoners access to money after they serve their time it will cause them to reoffend. It in near impossible for a former prisoner to get a job as no one wants to hire a criminal. I also don’t think it’s fair to make society pay to store criminals away in ever increasing numbers.

Instead of the death penalty for all we need to get real & honest about the root cause of crime. What we currently are doing is on a path to nowhere. We need to think outside the square. At the end of the day the apple does not fall far from the tree as it were, & much crime is brought on by poverty & broken homes I would suggest the following :-
Any person convicted of any crime with a possible sentence of 1 year or more who was not born in Australia to be deported to place of origin, regardless of current citizenship status. Also all of their assets to be siezed.
Any person convicted of any crime with a possible sentence of 1 year or more to lose the right reproduce. ie they get permanently & irreversibly sterilised.
If the above already have children they lose any form of access to them until they have 3 years of perfect behaviour, not even a speeding fine.
Any person found to be using illegal drugs to lose the right reproduce. ie they get permanently & irreversibly sterilised.
If the above already have children they lose any form of access to them until they have 1 full year of clean weekly (or more often) tests & no criminal behaviour.
Any person who fathers or gives birth to 2 children not in long term relationship to be permanently sterilised.
Additionally permanent birth control (sterilisation) should be fully paid for by medicare.

A bit over the top and permanent in my view...too open to abuse and and too uncomfortably close to eugenics for my liking.
How about this...they commit the crime, they get locked up or whatever. All previous convictions to be read in court instead of suppressed.
Any leniency or early release to be the responsibility of the person or persons who make the decision. Then these bleeding heart judges and parole boards can be held somewhat accountable for their social experiments (which is exactly what they are).
The fact that there's a highway to hell and a stairway to heaven says a lot about the anticipated traffic flow.
after the latest "polixce killing " What the fark was a 13 year old doing in possession of a hand gun . The cop just saved the justice system a life time of cost . where the hell were his parents ?

I’m no fan of capital punishment, but I have no issue with using convicted criminals in prison for suitable tasks. There is little reason why most prisons need to employ anybody by guards and medics. All other roles could be performed by those incarcerated, everything from cooking to cleaning to most maintenance.
Convicted criminals should be housed 4 to a cell and be fed only the basic foods to survive. Anything above this, such as if they want their own cell and/or more food, then they or their family must pay. Put the responsibility back on the individual and their family, instead of the taxpayer.
Usually 4 won’t fit in a cell there simply isn’t enough floor space, and with the overcrowding in prisons at the moment the cells that can fit additional prisoners already have them, usually 1 inmate to a bed and one on the floor on a mattress.
In prison cells that are now upgraded with bunk beds they can fit 3 inmates.
In what they call residential in prisons that are set up that way inmates share the rooms and are often on mattresses in the shared area
Cooking and cleaning duties are already handled by the inmates, there is even work contracts for manufacturing of items for the outside, eg fire extinguisher brackets and trailer components that inmates do, this offsets some of the costs however there are a lot of expenses that come with running a facility such as a prison and those expenses increase the more prisoners there are.
Expenses such as additional guards, security personnel, security maintenance, power, administrative staff, health care staff, specialist to run offender rehabilitation programs, police dog handlers for drug search.
In addition to this the more Unbearable for inmates you make it the higher the risk of rioting, the easier riots start with over crowding. Simply put more bodies easier to overpower the guards. The only way to combat that is with more prison guards. More guards mean more expense per inmate.
