    Default ELM327 OBD-II - looking for software

Have been given a ELM327 OBD-II interface with a physical USB cable, but no software to go with it. It's labelled with "Ford modified" and a toggle switch with no label to identify it's function. On the underside is a label "25K80 CH340" - presume that means 250k CAN compatible, so should be good for most modern vehicles (I hope)

Looking to have a play with it on our Mk7.5 VW Golf. Just basic stuff to read trouble codes, maybe view live data... and even better if I can manually change hex codes to customise things like daytime running lamps etc. What - preferably free or reasonable low cost - Windows based software would you suggest that can do those functions? I see TOAD is often recommended but it's USD $350+ price is a bit hard to swallow to just have a little play. There was a thread here for ELM327 software, but it is 7 years old.

any generic software will retrieve codes and may delete them.

the elm interface will only do basic functions, that switch would be to switch modes for key programming etc. using forscan or similar.
i recommend obdlinx mx+ if you want to get serious, a lot of sortware is specifically tailored to use the higher end functions of this unit, or really serious get a j2534 interface....

i use alfa obd for stellantis group vehicles, ram, chrysler alfa etc, i would think there is something similar for vw. try some vw forums.

With many German manufacture vehicles, the OBD2 coverage is -very- basic, and you need a J2534 interface to get into the data of interest (and you often can't access/clear DTCs without it)

I've found with my autel LV tablet I need to use the j2534 for any thing other than basic stuff, rather than the basic Interface it came with.

The hv tablet came with the j2534.
