That would be good... if I had the bandwidth to spare (which I don't)!

Yep, same here -- even uploading a vid to ewetoob is a pita, and being on fixed wireless....end of story for now (tpg gave us a refund and free shift down to a slower plan because they couldn't provide the quoted speeds for the next plan up)

So just out of interest, never having done this myself, how does this actually work?

Does my Plex server completely sync with your Plex server over time? Or can you pick and choose what you want synced?

Or do they exchange some kind of playlist and transfer files only on demand?

Or do they even transfer files at all, or only stream content you want to watch right now?

Pm me Andrew and I'll explain.

You remote access a share so no need to 'sync'. The server does it!

    What setups do you have?

I've been looking for way too long for a home 4-bay NAS.
But to have one capable also as a Plex Server, prices appear to be in the $000's due to requirement for bigger CPU and memory to convert AV formats on the fly.

Is above BS, or do you need to spend some decent money?

What is an ideal Plex Server setup?

I use a 2 bay Synology DS220+ as a home NAS and Plex server. For redundancy, it backs up to another Synology NAS off-site.

I find the DS220+ decodes on the fly (locally and when connecting remotely) without issue. I mostly have 1080p files, but some are 2060p. It can be had for under $500. The 4 bay equivalent goes for under $700.

why bother with plex, or any other server, just use dlna (qnap nas) to share to media player on smart tv.

for any formats the tv doesnt play (dolbyvision 4k x265) i use a nvidea shield...

I have tried a few media servers, but they don't offer any advantage over dlna.

Plex automatically organises, categorises and pulls down metadata, giving the end user a ‘Netflix’ type interface with absolutely no effort from the end user. That is the big benefit of Plex over using DLNA.

Don't need all that, and dlna works while the qnap is raid scrubbing etc. Media servers don't.

I use rtorrent pro on the nas, which can do the organising meta downloads etc, but again I don't need it....

Ive got twonky server on the nas, which works fine. Being a qnap with their known security issues, it's a good idea to only run the bare essentials....

All good if you don’t need it, but that is one reason why people bother with Plex.

Another benefit is being able to play your media on any device, or any browser, from any location. Again, if that’s is not something you need then Plex probably isn’t for you, but it is another big draw card.

At bare minimum I would like to see a Plex tips and tricks group here.

I am currently playing around with actual servers instead of just my windows PC as my plex system.

Currently all files are on NAS's and the server links to them across the network.

I have a Dell Poweredge 610 32G ram 4 x 3TB in Raid5 config and I am just seeing how it performs before I upgrade the disks to 10TB in its internal RAID and have all files and server on one machine.

I am also playing around with Linux as the plex engine.

My biggest issue is transferring the meta data frm one machine to the other cross platforms so as I can preserve the "last watched" for my family, who all have individual accounts on the server.

It is problematic and "methods" I have found to do this dont seem to work???

    this should do the job,
It has worked for me previously.

    just a simple db export.
I run dedicated Linux for plex with a synology NAS running docker images sonarr/radarr etc and shared drives mapped across

I'd love a simple "how to", I'm wanting to move my Plex from a separate install on my Synology NAS to inside a Docker image, there are some guides around but I'm finding them all very confusing.

Thanks slippery49, Marius Hosting has some good stuff on Synology/Plex.

I don't rely have an issue setting Plex up in Docker, it's copying/moving all the metadata on the video files as I've spent countless hours getting the movie/tv show data correct.

DLNA isn't supported on many high end tvs these days due to security risks!

My Sony dumped it in a recent update!
