Don's generous offer might be a tad too large for your needs but there is nothing better than free, assuming you also live in NZ.

You might find a second hand Honda for $500 but Yamaha even second hand may cost more.
Problem with the cheapies is that they are likely to fail if rarely used, which I know very well from experience.

How often do you have outages and for how long?
With that low load you are talking about and as you didn't mention a fridge, keeping a 12V battery charged with a and a cheapo inverter might be more practical.
Those cheap Chinese sine wave inverters do work, they just don't last long under daily load.

Recent outage lasted 18 hours but generator time would have been about half that, house temp was 11deg c.
Last year outages totaled about 40 hrs, Normally the fridge is ok.

From what I have read "inverter" genies may not be the best.

9 hours a bit long for a simple battery setup, would need maybe 200Ah and that would exceed the $500 limit even with Supercheap Century flooded deep cycle.

I would try to find a second hand quality brand generator that appears looked after and runs well.
