Just such a classic. Brilliant.
I quite agree. Made in "The Golden Age" of Hollywood when genuine character actors had constant work. Think of Sydney Greenstreet and Peter Lorre; far from handsome, but great actors.
The studio system paid them a wage and had the actors under contract. The most famous obviously earned good money but not the obscene amounts paid today.
A movie that has stood the test of time. Pity I cannot get any of my three daughters (17-21 years old) to watch any of those "awful" black & white movies.
As an aside, my favourite character actor was Walter Brennan who won three best supporting actor Oscars. Loved his work in "The Westerner" with Gary Cooper.

I'll just pop my head in here, and point out folks who like watching this top-shelf classic movie, can buy/rent the viewing pleasure on youtube
(disclaimer: not that I particularly like the way google and youtube carry on most of the time, but the above is still worth mentioning, because this movie is 'essential viewing' in a lot of ways =)
