Default Ethernet Cable Splitter for DSL Connection

    G'day

I'm wanting to upgrade my old Telstra router to something more up to date, have been looking at the D-link COVR systems. My issue is that the COVR doesn't have a DSL port so I'm wondering is there any decent Ethernet Cable splitters on the market so we can still run a home phone?

Any info would be greatly appreciated, cheers.

What are you trying to achieve here?

    The D-link COVR system is basically just a wireless/mesh extender, and on the product page ;

If your Telstra router is working and doing what you need, why change?

You're correct, the D-link COVR is only a router and requires an NBN modem, which is likely what your Telstra router is (modem/router).

You connect the D-link COVR to the Telstra modem and your home phone works the way it does now.

You cannot just use a DSL/phone splitter like with ADSL as the NBN signal is digital. Your modem/router converts it to analogue so you can still use analogue phones.

You can use a splitter, but only with compatible VOIP handsets.

G'day mtv, thanks for the reply.

The issue is the old Telstra router, it's the original one we received when we connected to the NBN via satellite, we're constantly having to reset it. Our house is about 35m long with the router at one end so I was just wanting to upgrade the router and get the best possible range, hence the interest in the mesh systems.

The old router has a DSL port in it which we connect the home phone to, the newer systems don't seem to have this port unless I look for a DSL router?

    Cheers.

    Ah... satellite NBN is different.

There are two different methods of phone line with satellite NBN. Which method is yours?

So do you have an NTD (NBN Network Terminating Device satellite box) and that plugs into your modem/router and your phone also is via satellite... OR... is your phone still via the copper phone cable?

There is an NTD box on the wall which the router is plugged in to and the phone is plugged in to the modem/router (no copper cable). Am I right in calling it a satellite, it's a diamond shaped box on the roof?

    Like this?

If so, that's NBN fixed wireless, not satellite -- we have such a setup here.

    Pashy,

There is also a couple of ways phones can be connected via NBN Wireless.

Given you have no copper phone line connection, your phone is connected VIA the NTD/Modem/Router.

I don't understand why you would need a DSL port as with that type of setup, there is no DSL connection, just a WAN connection from the NTD to the modem/router.

Your conventional landline phone then plugs into the modem/router.

Perhaps you mean you need a modem/router with a phone/handset port, rather than a DSL port?

If you are having problems with the router/modem (and Telstra is still your service provider) I suggest you report it as a fault and request a replacement modem/router.

The current Telstra wireless smart modem/routers are quite good and you can add boosters to them if needed, but in most cases, the wireless signal from them is very good.

Please post some pics of your set-up, so we know exactly what you have and how it's connected.

Yep that's the contraption on our roof!

As for our connection set-up, I'm feeling a bit stupid because upon closer inspection it seems you're on the money, it's a phone port I'm after not a DSL port, not sure why I went down that path......

Unfortunately too many people have told me "Don't use the Telstra modem/routers because they're s**t", but if you're confident they're reliable then I'll just contact Telstra and request the upgrade.

Not sure if it's still the case. but telstra were deploying tp-link Archer vr1600v modem/routers as standard gear, and they work fine.... (I'm not sure if there is a 'telstra' modem/router anymore)
