Default Lightning strikes and a 4G internet connection

    Hi guys

I recently installed one of those Telstra Smart Modems Gen 2 (I still have ADSL)

when the internet is down (not connected) the modem changes to the 4G internet connection (mobile sim card in the smart modem)

a storm with a close by lightning strike took out two of my router/modems a few years ago ..... so now as soon as I hear the thunder getting too close I disconnect the DSL Phone line and switch off the router/modems until the storm passes ...

I would like to ask if I disconnect the DSL phone line during a storm and only use the 4G internet though the modem is it still likely to destroy the modem if the storm strike is close ... or not ?

    cheers

A nearby lightening strike can still enter and damage the modem via the mains power connection.

This is actually the most common path of entry to equipment, rather than by the copper phone line.

Another benefit of fibre... not being affected.

A good power line filter can mitigate such damage.
I'm out of my mind, but feel free to leave a message...

Don't worry about the cost of Telstra Smart Modems, they can be picked up for $20 on Gumtree.
I use one as a modem in bridge mode. They don't seem to ever disable the 4G component unless you are abusing it.

...only if you disconnect the Fibre modem from mains before a storm and it has a still working backup battery.
Just been to Jaycar to get a new 12V 7.2Ah battery for 35 bucks.

I always wondered what happens to the 'Node' on FTTN when these things happen. Does the whole neighbourhood have to wait a month until it finally gets fixed?

@Osirius, I think it would be better idea to have data on your phone so you can tether to your battery powered devices when you want to power things down in a storm
rather than paying for a backup SIM on your modem.

Edit: Just saw that the backup SIM maybe part of the contract, but I don't trust Telstra. Check if you are not paying extra for that service.

Update: A deletion of features that work well and ain't broke but are deemed outdated in order to add things that are up to date and broken.
Compatibility: A word soon to be deleted from our dictionaries as it is outdated.

I was referring to the fibre cable itself not being affected.. as opposed to copper phone cable.

Yes, of course any type of modem connected to the mains is at risk.

You don't need a tin foil hat, just get one off Gumtree or out of the nearest waste receptacle. You don't pay for the data - not if you are with Telstra nor if you find it on the side of the road or in the bin.

Should be right up your alley mate, collect a heap of them and link them altogether to create a super internet service free of charge that screws a corporate behemoth and saves the planet ! Now theres a fkn plan if I ever heard one

Speeds are limited, its a backup service and also functions to help you get set up
