I would say simply because of this they ended up ruling the world:
IBM charged $240 per copy for CP/M, and only $40 for DOS.
    Marketing is everything.
Update: A deletion of features that work well and ain't broke but are deemed outdated in order to add things that are up to date and broken.
Compatibility: A word soon to be deleted from our dictionaries as it is outdated.
Humans: Entities that are not only outdated but broken... AI-self-learning-update-error...terminate...terminate...

agreed, though, IIRC, CP/M came bundled with a word processor and spreadsheet which M$ charged extra for. In the end the costs were about the same, Only real difference was, as you said, marketing, The average noddy saw the cheaper price and said, that's what I want. It's like buying a car without wheels 'cause it;s cheaper. You want to go somewhere (i.e. do something productive), Oh, that will be another $1,000.00. "Never saw that coming".......
