    Default Cataloguing Software Recommendation

My brother is in need of a good PC based cataloguing program.

In his case, he wants to organise a truly huge collection of LP records. Thousands.

    Any recommendations, experience, advice welcome.

    Cheers

Not sure what free apps are available, but I have used Microsoft Access for the same purpose.

(Searchable database for cataloging music, by song title, artist, album, label, release date, etc, etc... as many parameters of info you wish to add.)

It's part of Microsoft Office, now called Microsoft 365.

Unknown if it's available as an individual program.

I originally used a Microsoft Access relational database as well. Fully searchable with different forms for Entry searching etc, but don't bother with it now. I ripped all my CDs to flac, and use MediaMonkey Gold to manage the digital copies, with an entry to tell me if I have the CD.

But just had a quick look at this freeware Music Collection Database app, and it looks pretty good for a freebie: I downloaded it and checked for viruses with Kaspersky, and it came up clean... (hmmm I wonder how safe Kaspersky is now LOL)

Not played with anything that specific but, if you don't want to pay M$, LibreOffice is free and "base" is the Access equivalent. You could create a database quite simply or go quite complex. A simple database could even be created using a spreadsheet, depending upon the amount of data you want to keep.
I'm out of my mind, but feel free to leave a message...

Depends on what he wants to achieve ; a simple spreadsheet (excel or equiv) would do --- more modern offerings do all sorts of hinky stuff, like download the album artwork, sometimes lyrics, and even get online estimates on what the record is worth etc and blablabla. ..

He hasn't been very specific with me, so he may not really know what he wants. But he knows what he has is worth. He sold one album last week for $8500, and that was a low price to another collector.

He could keep an online database on Discogs. Some people on another forum say it's useful for knowing what the going price is for specific pressings.
