Which UNIX or LINUX distro should I try?
I've mostly always only run Windows, currently running Windows 10 like most other folks, but I've got a few old PC's laying around, so I thought I'd have a little bit of a play with a linux/unix distro. I've had a little bit of a look at free BSD, but nothing much else, what's a good one to start with, just for a bit of fun?

I've been playing with pfsense (free BSD) on a sophos appliance.
Running snort and lcdproc, everything running fine.
Next is setting up a sfp vdsl modem and bridging the lan port to the 8 spare ports to eliminate my external switch.
Then I should have a self contained fully configurable software firewall/modem/router.....
I have noticed it's better than my high end draytek modem/router.
Im using telstra modem bridged at the moment.
Ping to telstra Perth has gone from 22ms down to 19.5 and utube etc much snappier...

Kubuntu 22.04, you hardly notice the difference to Windows 11 or a Mac these days.
This version also has long term support and the Discover app is very useful to ...err discover all the free software
It took me less than 5 minutes to install from a USB stick. You gotta make the stick of course, very easy with Etcher, also about another 5mins. I have given up on DVDs.
Keep in mind with distro like this you have all the apps for day to day computing already fully installed.
Really old weak PCs are best served with an XFCE desktop, like Xubuntu. It has a lot of great user friendly features like the KDE version with less stress on the CPU.

Update: A deletion of features that work well and ain't broke but are deemed outdated in order to add things that are up to date and broken.
Compatibility: A word soon to be deleted from our dictionaries as it is outdated.
Humans: Entities that are not only outdated but broken... AI-self-learning-update-error...terminate...terminate...
I use Mint with the Cinnamon desktop with no issues on older gear though XFCE is the recommended for underpowered stuff. I only use windows to access bits of fruit (Apple) these days, Installation is easy and you can use the stick/DVD as a live environment to test the gear before you actually install it.
