    Default Power bricks/cheap transformers

Alright, I'm aware that, for example, if I get 2x 12 Volt batteries, and connect them together in series, I'll obtain 24 volts, but I'm wondering if I can use the same logic for power brick type adaptors, like the ones used to power modems and stuff like that, if I got say, 2x 9V DC adapters, could I wire them together, and generate 18V and run them, for example, to charge a cordless drill battery? What about if they are putting out AC? if I join 2x AC sources together in series, will I also increase the voltage?
