Default replacing ignition coil with a small transformer

When I was a kid, I remember getting a small transformer out of a clock radio, hooking it up backwards to a 9V battery, and getting a fairly decent SPARK out of it, so I decided to wire it to a SPARK PLUG, and it made the spark plug fire, so my question is, would it be possible to replace the ign coil with one of these transformers? I assume the way a coil works is pretty similar though.

    Cheers, Gab

Nope - insufficient current/voltage -- compression of air/fuel ratio in the cylinder requires higher voltage ; years ago there were 'spark plug testers' --- they had an air pressure chamber and sight glass to view the plug electrodes ; even with a 'bad' ignition system. spark plugs will spark in atmospheric pressure, but not spark in a chamber at 100PSI
