It's icing up and defrosts when switched off.
Gday guys,
Our LG split system air con needs attention. It's our only form of heating in the lounge room.
It is working but when it is switched off it makes boiling and huffing sounds for ages. I mean like minutes, Maybe 5 or 10.
Last night I went outside to the compressor to find it steaming. It was pretty cold outside. The fan wasn't running but it sounded like it was still operating (although quietly).
I turned it off at the circuit breaker.
Now it's 10:30am and I'm about to go look at it. Any ideas ?

You mean it will run a defrost cycle before turning off ? and it's normal ?
It does sound similar to when a fridge defrosts.

Try hosing out the condenser on the outside unit.
Clean filters on indoor unit.
If it still does it get it serviced, gas may be low...

Ok so I just went out and checked it.
Condenser clean. Fan spins freely.
I switched the breaker back on and the compressor started running and no fan... Inside unit still off but can hear the results of the compressor being on.
Have I got a jammed relay or shorted mosfet or something ?

A model number would be useful.
Defrost logic is determined by the temperature of the outdoor coil and ambient conditions.
The indoor fan will turn off during a defrost cycle to prevent cold air from blowing in the conditioned space.
Refrigerant pressure will equalise when the system is turned off.
Check that the indoor coil is clean. If this is a high wall split, the indoor fan coil can get very dirty and heat exchange is limited. The barrel fan can become clogged and is a PITA to clean.
Leave it on at the breaker so the crankcase heater stays at temperature. Probably just condensate boiling off due to the compressor being hot.

I went checking again this afternoon. Turned the breaker back on and the outdoor unit stayed quiet this time.
Inside again and it was set it to run cold (18C) and measured 4.5C at the outlet so I think the gas is ok.
Turned it off for half an hour then set it to run heating and after 15 mins. measured 26C at the outlet. It then cycled down with the room at 24C.
After each test I went outside to witness switch off and it did that without a hitch.
We didn't use that air con tonight because it wasn't so cold but I'll do some more checking tomorrow. I have a feeling this might be my fault as to why the weird symptoms were happening.
I'lla be bach !
It looks like it's working fine now.
When I checked it the other day I noticed it was set already to cooling. I think I did that a couple of weeks ago on a warm day, and it was forgotten about. So since then it was used for heating the lounge room but in cooling mode and set for like 26C. Stupid really and obviously the air con didn't like doing that with really cold nights outside.
